About Mohammed Zoheb

I am a Research Scholar currently, working in earthquake engineering, and did a Master's in Structural Engineering from the Vellore Institute of Technology. I can teach Civil Engineering students Structural Mechanics, Hydrology, structural analysis, and various other subjects taught during the civil engineering course. I love to teach with suitable examples, which helps the students to remember the concepts throughout their life. I passed with distinction during my Bachelor's and Master's degree. Teaching is my passion so know very well how to deliver my knowledge. I am experienced in providing comprehensive training in various structural analysis and design software programs, including ABAQUS, SAP2000, ETABS, and Staad Pro. My expertise lies in teaching subjects such as load combination, concrete, and steel design according to the Eurocode, Ontario standards.

I teach by giving suitable examples. I make a subject interesting by helping students understand the basic concepts, not by forcing them to memorize complex equations. I teach by showing pictures and videos to students, as we all know that a picture is worth a thousand words.

Find out more about Mohammed Zoheb

  • Tell us more about your subject. How did you develop an interest in this field?

My field of expertise lies in the development and optimization of low-cost base isolation techniques for masonry structures (civil/structural/earthquake engineering). I became fascinated by this area during my postgraduate studies when I first encountered the immense challenges posed by earthquakes in developing regions. Witnessing the devastation to lives and livelihoods sparked my interest in finding affordable and accessible solutions to improve seismic resilience. The interdisciplinary nature of this field-merging structural engineering, material science, and computational modeling-has kept me deeply engaged and motivated.
  • What or who is the motivation behind you choosing to teach & why?

My motivation to teach stems from a desire to empower students with knowledge that can transform lives. As an educator, I see teaching as a platform to inspire curiosity, encourage critical thinking, and guide young minds to tackle real-world problems innovatively.
  • How does your work help society?

My work directly contributes to making earthquake-resistant technologies accessible to communities in developing countries. By focusing on low-cost solutions like Unreinforced Elastomeric Isolators, I aim to enhance the safety of masonry structures, which are prevalent in resource-constrained areas. This not only protects lives during seismic events but also reduces economic losses, fostering resilience in vulnerable communities.
  • If you had to think of a role model for your work, who do you think of & why?

My role model is Dr. George W. Housner, often called the "Father of Earthquake Engineering." His pioneering research in seismic analysis and structural dynamics laid the foundation for many modern advancements in earthquake-resistant design. His work inspires me to think critically and innovate solutions that are both effective and practical for diverse applications.
  • Tell us about your hobbies outside teaching.

Outside teaching and research, I enjoy exploring the intersection of mathematics and real life, creating engaging content for social media platforms. Sharing the beauty of math in everyday scenarios helps me connect with a broader audience. Additionally, I enjoy reading science fiction and experimenting with photography to capture nature's intricate patterns.
  • Do you have an anecdote to tell us about your student or professional life?

During a shake table test of a masonry model fitted with Unreinforced Elastomeric Isolators, a student remarked, "It's incredible how a small addition can make such a huge difference!" This moment reaffirmed the importance of my work and the value of teaching through hands-on experiments. Seeing that spark of realization in students is one of the most rewarding aspects of my career.
