About Rochelle

As a saxophone teacher, I believe that developing a student’s individual musical voice is as important as building technical proficiency. My teaching approach begins with establishing strong fundamentals: posture, breath support, embouchure, finger coordination, and articulation, which together allow for a controlled, expressive sound. Intonation and tone color are continually refined through focused exercises and attentive listening. I place a strong emphasis on ear training and improvisation, introducing students early to the joy of spontaneous creation and musical conversation. Through guided improvisation, scale practice, and listening to influential saxophonists, students develop a vocabulary that empowers them to express their unique musical ideas. Music theory is integrated into lessons in a practical and approachable way, helping students understand the structures behind the music they love. Repertoire choices are personalized, covering styles ranging from jazz and blues to classical and pop, ensuring students remain engaged and inspired. I help students set achievable goals tailored to their interests and abilities, whether preparing for performances, auditions, or personal projects. Incorporating technology such as recording software and metronomes enhances practice efficiency and self-assessment. One of my most gratifying teaching experiences was supporting a student through the challenge of stage fright to deliver a memorable solo performance, illustrating the power of confidence-building alongside technical skill development. Ultimately, I aim to guide students toward becoming well-rounded saxophonists who are technically adept, creatively expressive, and passionate about their musical journeys.

My saxophone teaching approach is grounded in the belief that technique and creativity are inseparable, and that every student’s path to musicianship is unique. From the very first lesson, I work with students to establish healthy breathing, embouchure, posture, and finger dexterity, laying the foundation for a beautiful, sustainable sound.

Alongside these fundamentals, I emphasize musicality and expression by encouraging students to explore improvisation, phrasing, and dynamics. I believe music should be engaging and relevant, so I tailor lesson plans to each student’s interests, incorporating jazz standards, classical pieces, contemporary music, and popular songs to keep lessons fresh and motivating. Music theory and ear training are integrated in practical ways, helping students understand scales, harmony, and rhythm to deepen their musical insight and creative potential. Technology tools like slow-down apps, backing tracks, and recording software are used to enhance practice and foster self-reflection.

Performance is a critical component of growth; I regularly support students in preparing for recitals, auditions, and jam sessions to build confidence and communication skills. One memorable experience involved a student who initially lacked confidence in improvisation but blossomed through targeted exercises and performance practice, ultimately leading their school jazz band. I am dedicated to creating a supportive, inspiring environment where students feel empowered to take risks, develop technical skill, and cultivate their individual artistic voices.
