About Dan

My name is Dan and I have Bachelor of Arts and a Masters of Science in chemistry. In my experience as a substitute and full-time classroom teacher in the Austin, TX area, I was highly qualified in math and science for grades 8 through 12 and have several years experience working with high "at-risk" population students. I was also a bilingual Spanish 4th grade teacher. I enjoy the challenge of "demystifying" concepts for students and helping them to get over learning humps.

-What sets me apart as a tutor is my patience and experience working with struggling, high "at-risk" students.

-My approach to tutoring is to
1) Review the methods and examples the student's teacher has given the student.
2) Clarify what the student is not understanding.
3) Give the student simple notes to summarize the concept.
4) Work examples for the student to pertinent to the topic.
5) Supervise the student working practice problems.
6) Review for comprehension and understanding.
7) Provide additional practice problems and resources.

-Sample Lesson Plan
Topic: What does the slope-intercept form tell us about hte graph of a linear equation?

1) Give students notes which display the concept taking advantage of resources on the internet, such as youtube.
2) Work through a real world example, like:
The graph of the price of pizzas vs. # of toppings has crosses the y-axis at 10 and has a slope of 2 over 4.
What does this tells us about the price of the pizzas?
3) Illustrate how the y-intercept represents the flat cost of the pizzas($10) and the slope represents $0.50 per topping

- My Target Student Audience: High school and college students
