About Phillip
I received a B.A. with Honors in English from Yale and an M.A. and Ph.D from the University of Chicago. I have published two books of literary criticism and a memoir. During my career, I have written widely about African American literature, criticism, and my own life as a critic. I have found that literature introduces us to the life-worlds of other people, and in doing so to ourselves. I seek to introduce my students to this process of expanding their acqaintance with others and themselves.

I aim my teaching at middle and high schoo students. A typical section on fiction would describe plot, setting point of view in a literary work, charcterization, theme as well as the author's prose style. These elements of fiction would be discussed in individual class sessions. Students would write brief papers analyzing some of these aspects of a literary work in relation to the meaning of the work and the ideas of the author.
These are the basic sof fiction. I would discuss theme at different levels of complexity for middle and high schoolers. I would discuss these concepts in the simplest terms for students from 7th to 9th graders. For more advanced high school students, I would discuss the elements of fiction in the context of particular historical periods, literary genres, and national literatures.
I want to give my student the basics of a shared language of literary structure and concepts which will allow them to discuss intellectual ideas with me and each other in our sessions. This shared language should become the foundation of the papers with which they analyze literary texts for style, theme, and authorial strategies.
