I am a retired PhD in chemical engineering. I want to give something back.

Methodology

I use practical analogies to help students connect concepts to reality they will remember better. I have many shortcuts and easy ways to remember things. I amplify "learn the rules" to minimize memorization. I am a proponent of understanding, rather than tutor for the next test. Planning leads to success.

Background

I am a retired PhD chemical engineer, mostly in diamond and hard materials. I have a long history of innovation using fundamental understanding of the physics, chemistry and materials learned in school. The fundamentals will be used forever.

Selected competencies include the following:

Research and Development
Chemical Engineering
Innovative Tooling Design
Process Improvements
Comprehensive Technical Writing
New Product Development
Manufacturing Process Efficiencies
LEAN Methodology
Cost Controls

Employment History
September 2014 — June 11, 2019 Baker-Hughes, a GE Company Houston, TX
High Pressure R&D Operations Manager: PDC Drill Bits
BHI is an oil and gas services provider.
• Purchased, installed and operated a 3600-ton cubic press as well as ancillary grind and lapping machines to produce research PDC diamond cutters.
• Developed pressure/temperature (60kbar, 1700degC) profiles, pressure seals and heaters to produce industry-best cutters.
• Invented novel PDC cutters for non-braze attachment and instrumented ‘smart’ cutters and a novel pore-forming method based on Re alloys (to enable wires to be implanted in diamond). Made recommendations to supply chain on PDC cutter purchasing.

June 2011 — 2014 International Diamond Services, Inc. Houston, TX
Hard Materials Technology Manager
IDS provide diamond materials to the oil-and-gas drilling industry.
• Created new gauges and process technology to improve cost, space and safety in hot HF acid leaching of PDC diamond cutters. That process vastly improved the small company and is in still in use today.
• Created and field-tested a new PCBN cutting insert based on US2(concealed information).

1993 – 2011 GE Superabrasives/Diamond Innovations/Sandvik Worthington, OH
Senior Research Scientist: Hard and Refractory Sintered Materials
Now named Hyperion Materials and Technology, manufactured diamond and cBN in single-crystal grit and sintered forms (PCD, PCBN) for use as shaping and cutting tools in stone, concrete and metal cutting and drilling.

• Granted 27 US patents, 7 published papers. Subject matter expert in tool materials for precision chip-making in hard steel and cast-iron including WEDM, laser cutting, joining (brazing) and grinding and expert in PDC cutter manufacture, including China vendors.
• Wrote specifications on key raw material powders in mesh diamond synthesis including new graphite grain shape and ductility.
• Defined catalyst and seed specifications using Six-Sigma methodology that improved long-term capability to hit mesh size targets.
• Installed sieving, compaction and spray-dry equipment to improve the density distribution in green parts and proved density distribution is a CTQ for mesh diamond quality and yield: a missing CTQ. Co-inventor of the Bellataire HPHT gem diamond, the first demonstration of non-detectable permanent gem diamond color change, brown to white (or pink). That product generated 100MM$ revenues in its first decade and has spawned several copy-cat companies in the US and China. It is still used today to decolor high-strain/high-growth-rate synthetic diamond gemstones, a rapidly expanding business after FTC decision Sept 2018.
• Invented and pushed into the field the HTM hard-turning PCBN grade for gear finish cuts and invented the one-piece resin ABA co-injection molded abrasive cutoff blade.
• Designed the press-fit and PM molded steel and plastic (Ultem) metal-cutting insert to eliminate labor-intensive small-part assembly and braze.
• Worked closely with European sales team and Stockholm laboratory to create new products. Served as the company IP leader with the most applications filed 15 years in a row.

1990 – 1993 GE Corporate Research Schenectady, NY
Process Research Engineer
Projects in silicones direct process, MCS reactors, passivation of spent reactor contact mass. Project for GE Nuclear in salt precipitation/crystallization by reverse vs direct strike and how that affects powder flow and density. Project for GEP: first time use of multicomponent inverse gas chromatography to study Lexan devolatilization by steam.

• Granted 27 US patents, 7 published papers. Subject matter expert in tool materials for precision chip-making in hard steel and cast-iron including WEDM, laser cutting, joining (brazing) and grinding and expert in PDC cutter manufacture, including China vendors.
