About Christopher ClarinetNow
I retired from the West Point Band after 26 years of service. I have a double Master of Music in Clarinet Performance and Conducting from New Mexico State University and a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of North Alabama. I spent 10 years (while at West Point) studying with clarinet master clarinetist, teacher, craftsman, composer Kalmen Opperman in New York City. I also served as the adjunct clarinet professor of both Marist College and Nyack College (Nyack College recently closed).
On top of clarinet, I was also the Drum Major of the West Point band. So, if you are a clarinetist and a future Drum Major (and you don't have to be a clarinetist), I'd be glad to connect with you about leadership and learn and understand better your conducting (or mace) technique.
And on top of that, I was the Public Affairs Chief of the West Point Band and have good tips on music career whether you are thinking of a military career or alternatives to Music Education. Let's chat! Let's lesson!

My clarinet lessons are personalized to each student's goals, whether they are beginners, middle and high school band students, college music majors, adult learners, or musicians preparing for auditions. As a retired Sergeant Major from the U.S. Army West Point Band with more than 34 years of teaching experience, I help students develop strong fundamentals while building confidence and musical expression.
A typical clarinet lesson includes tone development, breathing, articulation, finger technique, scales, sight-reading, and work on solo, ensemble, or band music. Students receive clear practice strategies and constructive feedback to help them make consistent progress between lessons.
What sets me apart is my combination of professional performance experience, decades of private teaching, and specialized knowledge of audition preparation. I have helped students improve their clarinet technique, prepare for honor bands, All-State auditions, college auditions, military band auditions, and personal musical goals. My teaching style is encouraging, structured, and focused on helping every clarinet student reach their highest potential. I also help adults return to the clarinet and find great joy teaching these passionate students.

“Best decision ever—our son went from beginner to perfect NYSSMA scores and 1st chair in just two years.”
The band director at our son Jim’s school recognized his potential on clarinet after his first year studying in 6th grade band, and highly recommended Chris Jones specifically as a private clarinet teacher.
Best decision ever! In the first two years of lessons with Chris, Jim achieved a nearly perfect score on a level 4 NYSSMA solo in 7th grade, and a perfect 100 on his level 5 solo as an 8th grader. The improvement in his musicianship has given Jim SO many opportunities – he has been performing with the HS band as 2nd chair clarinet since 7th grade, and now as a freshman he is 1st chair.
He has been on 1st clarinet at bi-county festivals and Jr. area all state. He was invited to play clarinet in a local theater production, and as a 9th grader achieved a 100 on a level 6 solo. The proficiency level that Chris has helped Jim reach has had an immeasurable positive impact on his life.
Recently, when it was apparent that Jim needed a better instrument than the one on loan from the school, Chris spent hours walking us through the selection process, and meticulously “test driving” clarinets with Jim using a rigorous evaluation system to make sure that such a big purchase was the right one. We are so fortunate that we have such an amazing resource in our area.View more recommendations
