About Richard
With nearly 20 years of in-person and online tutoring experience, I've helped French learners from 7 to 70! I graduated with a first-class honours degree back in the early 1990s and have spent time living abroad among native French speakers on and off ever since, using my French for pleasure and for work.
My main recent focus has been on helping GCSE and A-level students achieve their best results. I have taken students struggling with a predicted 4 to an 8 in the exam. I've helped pupils who find the subject boring because they have to do it re-engage with the process and learn to enjoy it. Most of all I have helped youngsters who don't see the point of learning a language grow to appreciate their new skill and look forward to showing off their French on holiday.
As well as A-level and GCSE, I've tutored adults learning for love, for fun or for business, one of whom passed her DELF B1 exam. I've coached Westminster pupils through the Challenge, and done similar for Winchester and Eton. I have regularly helped 13+ pupils with their French Common Entrance paper.
This school year (2025-2026) I have been helping three GCSE students (studying the new Edexcel and AQA curricula), and one A-level student.
For A-level, I have helped students with the following novels: Delphine de Vigan's No et Moi, Guy de Maupassant's Boule de Suif, Françoise Sagan's Bonjour Tristesse, François Mauriac's Thérèse Desqueyroux, and Joseph Joffo's Un Sac de Billes; and films: Au Revoir Les Enfants and La Haine. I have helped with Independent Research Projects spanning topics from the Tour de France to the Algerian War.
I have an up-to-date Enhanced DBS

It is important to tailor lessons specifically to a student's needs, but my general method is to engage him or her at a level just above the 'comfort zone'. Learning is about challenging yourself to do better, and it is crucial for a tutor to be supportive and encouraging, and also to keep the bar high.
Lessons can be conducted entirely in French, or in a mixture of English and French. I can work alongside a student's existing course (that is, from a textbook a student is already following), or we can use course books that I recommend.
Where the level allows, I like to draw upon material from contemporary sources such as French news magazines.
For "conversation classes", I find it is useful to base the discussion on an article or a book to help build vocabulary, and also think that incorporating grammar instruction (where appropriate) can be a good idea.

Just a quick note to let you know that Cameron got an A* in his French at Merchant Taylors and we feel very grateful to you for the part you played in this achievement! Whilst it was at one point his weakest subject, he ended up with 4 x A*, 2 x A and 1 x B, so definitely one of the stronger ones. He was also awarded a scholarship at both the schools he applied for, so overall we are absolutely delighted.
`Just thought I should let you know I got an A! Thanks for all your help`
I ended up with an "A"... thanks for all your help, both my spoken papers improved, over my previous efforts.
`Thank you so much for all your patient hard work - you taught her exactly the right stuff and there is no way she could have done it without you! I really didn`t think it was possible to teach the whole year 7 curriculum in a week but somehow you managed it. Chatting to the other parents outside the exam, most of the competitors went to good independents or had been tutored over a long period of time. You really knew not only what to teach but how to teach it, which shows you have exceptional skills.`
We could not have asked for a better result - A*s! He got full marks for the reading paper. Thanks so much for all your help, and patience.
Henry won a scholarship to Westminster. Exactly what he was aiming for.

My in-person rate is £40/hour with no supplementary fee for travel within a one-mile radius of my home. Each extra mile (as the crow flies) attracts a £5 supplement per lesson. The first lesson is free and I can use this to calculate the exact amount further in-person lessons will cost including travel.
Online lessons are also £40 an hour, but if five lessons are paid for in advance there is a 5% discount (i.e. £190 for 5 hours). Ten lessons attract a 10% discount (i.e. £360 for 10 hours).
