About Richard

In the 1980s-1990s I was most active performing in the heyday of Metal music, recorded demo tapes, EP, LP, and played countless shows opening for bigger acts like Corrosion of Conformity, Nick Bowcott's band Barfly, the Icemen, the Lunachicks, and more at venues like the NY Marquee, CBGBs, the Sundance in Long Island NY, and the outdoor NY Scum Rock Festival in the Village. My band is featured in Encyclopedia Metallum, and my band has been featured in several magazines of that time such as Metal Mania and Metal Maniacs. I am a songwriter as well as an electric guitar player and bass guitar player as my secondary instrument. My teaching experience over the last 40 years started out with requests from fans of my band wanting to learn guitar and songwriting during the heyday of metal in the 80s. Since then my teaching methods have matured with a large breadth of materials featuring tab as well as note values for various etudes and technique building exercises in areas such as 2 handed tapping, neo-classical shred, alternate picking, hybrid picking, large interval etudes, and many other technical techniques like 5-6 string arpeggios and vertical playing.

About the lesson

Students can expect a caring teacher that wants them to learn and excel as quickly as possible, and not postpone their progress as other teachers do. You will learn as fast as your determination to do so, as I will provide more material than the typical teacher, and you will most likely ask me to slow down to your pace. Usually it's opposite of this with other teachers. I always put all lessons in a PDF that I customize for you and share it with you. This way you always have the materials for each lesson. I teach you exactly what you want to learn, and I move in your direction of interest to accomplish your goals. Lots of times, I go over the allotted time and do not charge extra because I care about your learning more than anything. I had recently been on TakeLessons for over 2 years and taught hundreds of lessons which earned very positive feedback as posted by the students, lots of them mentioning my professionalism, friendliness, willingness to go beyond the call of duty for them, and being a source of inspiration. My hard rock techniques are heavily influenced by Paul Gilbert, Yngwie Malmsteen, Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, Jimi Hendrix, Ritchie Blackmore, Tony Iommi, Uli Roth, Jimmy Page, Gary Moore, etc. The heavier speed metal aspects of my playing were heavily influenced by Metallica, Megadeth, System of a Down, Korn, Slayer, Possessed, Venom, Motörhead while the regular metal aspects were influenced by Judas Priest, Dio, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, early Def Leppard, Kiss, and also Iron Maiden.

My rates are based on my 40 years experience and approach to make you great overnight, and I always provide a PDF of what I teach so you do not need to purchase anything and can always refer to the PDF. Also lots of times I go over the time at no charge because I care about you learning. We can cover areas outside of the scope as well like bass guitar, stage setups, performance skills, etc.
