About Maya
I recently graduated from Rice University with a degree in Business Finance and a minor in Entrepreneurship. During my time in college, I developed a strong analytical foundation and a structured approach to problem-solving, which I now bring into my tutoring. I scored a 790/800 on the math section when I took the SAT.
I have prior experience working with students both in-person at Kumon in Paramus and online through a volunteer tutoring organization called Million Reasons. These experiences helped me learn how to adapt my teaching style to different learning needs, whether a student benefits from step-by-step guidance, extra repetition, or alternative explanations.
In terms of academic background, I have studied advanced mathematics including Linear Algebra and Differential Equations, which has given me a strong grasp of mathematical thinking and logic. This allows me to confidently teach subjects such as Algebra, Pre-Algebra, and elementary math while breaking down complex ideas into clear, understandable steps.

I keep my SAT Math prep sessions structured, but still relaxed and interactive so students don’t feel overwhelmed by the test. My goal is to make the SAT feel more like a skill you can learn and train for, rather than something intimidating or unpredictable.
Each session usually starts with a quick diagnostic warm-up—this could be a short mix of SAT-style questions to identify weak areas or reinforce previous topics. Then I break down the relevant math concepts in a clear, step-by-step way and show how they appear specifically on the SAT. We spend a lot of time on actual test-style problems, and I walk students through how to approach questions efficiently, avoid common traps, and manage time.
Once the core concept is clear, I shift toward active practice where the student works through questions while I guide and correct in real time. I also like to incorporate timed mini-sets and “challenge rounds” to simulate test conditions in a low-pressure way. When helpful, I turn certain concepts into quick drills or game-like exercises to keep the sessions engaging and improve recall.
What sets my SAT tutoring apart is that I focus not just on content, but on strategy and confidence. Many students already know most of the math—they just struggle with timing, wording, and test anxiety. I help bridge that gap so they can feel more in control when they sit for the exam.
These sessions are designed for high school students preparing for the SAT Math section at any level, whether they are building foundational skills, aiming to improve a mid-range score, or pushing into a top percentile range.

Maya tutored my daughter during summer break in various math topics to get her ready for 4th grade. She was patient and really organized her lessons to be fun and engaging. My daughter WANTED to go to teach tutoring session -- something we've never experienced before. She'd ask us, "When can we go to tutoring again?"
Maya has been tutoring my 12-year old son, Robbie, in math for the last year. She has been amazing and I have to say Robbie has thrived under her guidance. He is also less shy to ask questions in his math classes when he does not understand a problem or when his teacher is moving too fast. I highly recommend Maya to anyone looking for a fantastic tutor. - Barbara
