My methods when trying to help a student understand concepts is to go over the material initially, work on some simple and medium level problems and then allow the student to try some of the problems on their own. Once the student is comfortable with the material I like to work on some more challenging/thinking problems so the student can think outside of the box and understand the meaning of the material in more depth.
