About Katie

I bring a solid background to my tutoring, with a first degree in Geography and a second degree in Secondary Teaching. In addition to my academic qualifications, I have over a decade of life experience in the financial industry, which adds a practical, real-world perspective to my teaching. My travels around the world in my early years have further enriched my understanding of Geography and culture, allowing me to connect with students from diverse backgrounds. Over the past year, I’ve worked as a casual relief teacher, which has honed my ability to adapt quickly to different classroom dynamics. This diverse experience helps me personalize lessons for each student, ensuring they receive the support and guidance that best suits their learning needs. My passion lies in building trusting relationships with my students, ensuring they feel supported and confident as they tackle new challenges. Whether they need help with Geography or simply developing effective study habits, I’m dedicated to helping each student achieve their best.

About the lesson

In my first lesson with students, my main goal is to get to know them, understand their preferred learning methods, and identify areas where they may need more focus. These lessons tend to be 50 minutes to an hour. By creating an open and supportive environment, I encourage students to share their strengths, challenges, and any specific topics they’re struggling with. This helps me tailor my approach from the very beginning, ensuring that lessons are both engaging and effective.

As we progress, lessons are then an hour in length, where I will use a scaffolded approach, breaking down complex concepts into manageable parts and building their understanding step by step. By the end of our sessions, I aim to equip students with tools and strategies they can take home, such as structured approaches to writing essays, critical thinking skills, and strategies for better organising and presenting their ideas—skills that will benefit them not just in Geography, but across all their subjects.

While my lessons are primarily geared toward secondary school students, I also have two young children of my own, which gives me a strong understanding of how to approach learning with younger learners. I can adjust my methods to help primary school students develop a deeper understanding of the world around them, sparking curiosity and fostering a love of learning.
