I enjoy working with students of a variety of abilities!
In the first session, I usually conduct an informal chat in order to ascertain a student's strengths and areas where they could do with additional support. I want to know which areas of study the student is most passionate about and the goals they would like help in achieving. Through this discussion I work to build a plan. Crucially the plan is informed by their experience of teaching in the classroom, their specific interests and the requirements of the exam boards.
The emphasis of teaching is dependent on age or level. At 11+, I think it's important to demystify the examination process and build confidence and critical thinking skills in students, all whilst keeping the lessons as fun and as engaging as possible.
At GSCE and A-Level, the requirements of the exam boards, exam technique and past paper questions are central. I believe both stages are key moments in a student's future. Subject choices and examination results do inform future options. But I also believe it's important to sustain an expansive awareness of the paths available for all students and view examination periods holistically in order to build residence in the young people I work with.
For Oxbridge applicants, we work to build confidence in how students are able to talk about their subject. We explore theorists or theories they might be particularly interested in and areas they might not already be aware of, but could explore in further depth. I genuinely relish the opportunity to draw on the reading and reading suggestions that my degree has given me, to encourage and inspire applicants in their chosen discipline.
