About Aidan

As a Senior Biochemistry student, I have been involved in many extracurriculars on and off campus, but there was one that inspired me the most. My time as a Chemical Laboratory Teaching Assistant quickly became an area of excellence for myself. I was responsible for guiding and teaching simulated chemical research projects for a cohort of 30-35 undergraduate students each semester. The skills I received by evaluating and mentoring students such that I provided feedback essential to their growth and knowledge of chemical concepts makes me a qualified and dedicated teacher. Instilling a growth mindset within each one of my students each semester was apparent in their success within the course and really began to allow students to find a passion for learning. Outside of the classroom, I am an undergraduate researcher within the Cellular and Molecular Medicine department of the College of Medicine-Tucson. My project primarily involves the identification and characterization of chemical compounds that can be used as medicinal targets against pathogenic muscle proteins.

About the lesson

My approach to teaching involves both recognizing and addressing areas of improvement within the students course content, as well as cultivating productive study/learning methods that promote the students ability to self-assess their shortcomings within their course content and how to approach content with a growth mindset. Essentially, my teaching philosophy is to help students gain the skills to learn how to learn. A typical lesson plan would begin with a short discussion with the student about where they believe their areas of improvement are within their content and where they would like to be (in terms of understanding the content) by the end of their session. The student and I would then begin reviewing course content to address and build upon their knowledge of the content. Towards the end of the session, the student and I would have another short conversation about how they felt the session went, and then we would end the session by discussing study methods that best suit the students learning behavior such that they can become proactive learners inside and outside their session with me.
