This *online* lesson offers an overview of the field of Comparative Literature. We will study and apply philosophical, literary, and critical theories to better understand the society we live in.

I will give you a brief survey of western (and non-western) thoughts, ranging from traditional philosophers e.g. Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Kant, Hegel to more contemporary thinkers e.g. Edward Said, Susan Sontag, Hannah Arendt. We will learn how to understand contemporary society—its malaise as well as hopes—through texts and investigate how to put theory (theoria) into practice (praxis).

This lesson is particular suitable for 1) those who just enter college and are interested in pursuing the humanities 2) those who are interested in the humanities in general beyond coursework, but has little knowledge on the genealogy of Western thoughts 3) all who want to make friends!

Everyone is a teacher and a learner at the same time. I'm a learner myself. I'm more than excited to teach as well as learn with you.
