About Tom

I’m a Senior Lecturer in Composition at Leeds Conservatoire, with over 15 years of teaching experience across conservatoire, university, and private studio settings. I work with composers at undergraduate, masters, and professional levels across concert music, media composition, and theatre.

I’m an Associate Member of the RNCM and a Guinness World Record-breaking composer. My work has been performed by leading ensembles across broadcast, concert, and theatre contexts, including the BBC Proms and many of the BBC performing groups.

My teaching is focused on developing your individual voice. I don’t impose stylistic limitations. Sessions are structured around your goals, whether you’re preparing a conservatoire portfolio, refining orchestration, developing media-scoring technique and production workflow, or shaping a large-scale work.

Lessons can cover composition technique and structure, orchestration and instrumentation, harmony and form, media composition and production workflow, portfolio and audition preparation, and professional development as a composer.

I teach serious beginners through to advanced and professional composers. Sessions are detailed, practical, and tailored to your level and ambitions. If you’re committed to developing your craft and would value structured, conservatoire-level guidance, I’d be pleased to work with you.

About the lesson

I offer structured, detailed composition tuition focused on developing your individual voice and technical control. Sessions are typically 60 minutes and delivered from my professional studio with high-quality audio and screen sharing. As a Senior Lecturer in Composition at Leeds Conservatoire with over a decade of teaching experience, I work with serious beginners through to conservatoire applicants, undergraduates, postgraduates and emerging professionals. Lessons are practical and goal-focused, covering craft, orchestration, harmony, structure and professional development, always tailored to your level and ambitions. I teach concert, classical, media, film, TV and theatre composition.
