About Smilyan

I've been in the tech industry since around 2004 and I started by teaching myself the basics. Since then, I've worked as a freelancer, worked in a startup, in a professional consultancy and in one of the largest private software companies in the UK, on large scale projects.

I am very passionate about learning and I believe anyone can learn and be excited to do it. The reason why I want to teach is because the tech industry has given me a lot and I now want to give back.

I don't have just technical experience, but I've recruited people, given talks in front of hundreds of people and mentored others as part of my roles.

I am passionate about helping others feel empowered, about exciting them to learn more and grow themselves and their skills and this is why I am here.

About the lesson

The lessons will mostly adapt to what you want to learn. We can start with a project and teach you the basics to create, deploy and host your own website, depending on what you want to achieve.

Alternatively, we can focus specifically on a given technology, library, tool and bring your skills to a professional level, to advance your career or just expand your knowledge.

If you are not sure what you need to learn, we can start there and develop a personal growth plan.

The lessons will be one hour long, unless we decided that an hour and a half might be better.

These lessons are for any level. If you have never build a website and don't know what is involved, that's amazing, we can make it happen. Or if you are an experienced developer that wants to dig deeper into a specific technology, that's also great and we can work on that. If you want to build up your career or just learn a bit as a hobby, the lessons will adapt and I can guide you to getting to the result you want.

My experience is not just in building software and freelancing for clients, but I've also done multiple workshops and mentored people as part of my roles. I am very passionate about making others succeed, feel empowered and believe in themselves.

Perfect! Hands down! Smilyan has got to be one of the best tutors I've met! He took his time to understand my needs and tailor lessons towards my development. The combination of theory and practice in lessons along side his vast knowledge and experience really helps develop my thinking/approaches when it comes to writing code. He's a naturally gifted teacher able to communicate difficult concepts in an easy and more digestible way and always checks to make sure you understand before moving on. If you want to ensure you're in good hands, going with Smilyan is the way to go!

At the start of my career as a developer I was tasked with creating a dashboard that showed whether an API was up or down. Sounds simple enough except I knew nothing about creating dashboards or even where to start. Luckily, Smilyan was one of my new coworkers and he took the time to teach me how to build this using JavaScript, Node.js, and React. I had little to no knowledge of these technologies, and Smilyan was very patient when explaining the core concepts of them to me, such as callbacks and promises, as well as making sure I had a strong understanding of programming fundamentals. It can feel quite overwhelming sometimes when you think about just how much there is to learn, but Smilyan is great at breaking information down and making things as simple as possible.
