About Maya
My interest in the creative arts world began at an early age with jewelry making, drawing, painting, etc. Crafting and DIY projects really intrigue me. I honed in on Fashion Design and Interior Design in my secondary education at Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science (later renamed Philadelphia University), Moore College of Art, which is also in Philadelphia, and FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) in New York City. During this time, I also served as an assistant sewing instructor, to my mentor, who held weekly sewing classes for adults and children. Years later I had the pleasure of meeting a talented designer/seamstress who took me under her wing as an apprentice. From her I absorbed vast amounts of tips and secrets, including how to give my garments a professional look. I continue to sew at home, creating my own designs or using store-bought patterns for anything from clothing to home decor items.

I like to let students learn by watching a few demos and then sewing my own sample right along with them so that we can walk through the project together. I have no problem at all with repeating steps side by side with the student until it all makes sense. I know how it was when I was a beginner and things were unclear. I believe in explaining the “why” along with the “how”. Meaning that if you know WHY you’re taking a certain step then, most times, it makes it easier for you to grasp HOW to do it.
