About Brooks
With 7 years of chess teaching experience, my journey in the chess world started as a competitive player, participating in local and regional tournaments. Over time, I realised my passion for teaching and began coaching learners from beginners to intermediate players. I am committed to nurturing each student's unique potential, helping them develop not only technical skills but also a love for the game. My teaching philosophy centres around active engagement and critical thinking. I use a mix of physical chess sets and digital tools to analyse games and visualise positions, making complex ideas accessible and fun. I believe that mistakes are valuable learning opportunities and encourage a growth mindset in every lesson. I emphasise strategic thinking that goes beyond the board, fostering skills useful in many areas of life. I have worked with students of all ages, adapting my approach to individual learning styles and goals. Helping a student grasp a difficult concept or win their first tournament brings me immense satisfaction. For me, chess is more than a game—it’s a lifelong source of challenge, creativity, and personal growth, and I’m excited to share that with you.

Chess lessons in Edinburgh focus on creating a strong foundation and building strategic thinking tailored to each student’s pace. Beginners are introduced to the rules, basic piece movements, and simple tactics such as forks, pins, and discovered attacks. We start with classic openings to help students understand fundamental positional concepts like controlling the centre and developing pieces efficiently. The lessons blend theory with practice, featuring real games and puzzles to make learning dynamic and engaging. For intermediate learners, the emphasis moves to tactical awareness and positional play. Students analyse the middle game in depth, learning to evaluate threats, create plans, and coordinate pieces harmoniously. We study famous grandmaster games, breaking down complex positions to understand decision-making under pressure. Endgame techniques are also a key focus, covering critical skills such as king and pawn endgames, opposition, and key checkmate patterns. Alongside technique, I encourage discipline, patience, and resilience—important skills both on and off the board. Advanced students receive personalised game analysis, opening repertoire development, and training in time management and psychological aspects of competition. I offer consistent feedback through annotated game reviews and tailored exercises. The goal is to cultivate independent thinking and confidence, empowering students to compete and enjoy chess at every level.
