About Patrick

20 years experience of individual and group teaching of harmonica and musicianship. My current pupil Izzy aged 11 is the HarmonicaUK youth champion for 2024. Patrick learnt to play diatonic harmonica in the 60’s during the British Blues ‘Explosion’ having had little formal musical education. Early idols were Sonny Terry and Little Walter. The method was trial and error – find the right key and play along to the vinyl and spend every possible hour doing it. Jamming with Chicken Shack on stage at the Clouds Club in Derby was an early thrill. Early trials with the chromatic were unpromising, but hearing Stevie Wonder soon changed that and he gained 3rd prize in the NHL Blues competition in 2007. Since retiring Patrick spent three years on the Jazz Course at Citylit College in London – the first harmonica player ever on the course. He has studied with top players including Adam Glasser, Julian Jackson, Jim Hughes, William Galison in New York, Hermine Deurloo and with Antonio Serrano at the 2016 Hohner Masters Course in Trossingen. He was very proud to carry off the NHL Jazz player of the year award in 2016. More excellent playing experience has come annually at the Dordogne Jazz Summer School which has a range of top jazz tutors.

About the lesson

Featuring the Hohner Melody Star harmonica, specially designed for beginners we begin with a set of simple folk, blues or classical tunes in the key of C major. This harmonica is aimed at starting you on melody and keeps your musical options really wide. I do blues any time, but that is actually a specialised genre that can trap the beginner in a certain style of playing. Although learning tunes by ear often works best, it is important for the harmonica player to lose any fear of musical notation, so we use the dots to guide us to the best music. I encourage students to sing everything they play - the harmonica and the voice are very close friends and keep the working atmosphere happy and bright. Patrick has been our now 11yr old sons harmonica teacher for the last 4 years and our son has gone from strength to strength in all things musical - all credit to Patrick for giving our boy the chance to shine at the Harmonica UK national competition where at the age of 10 he won the national under 11’s Primary Solo 5-11 years competition! We will be back there again this year too….. keep up the good work Patrick!
