About William
I have taught many students to play guitar effectively and efficiently in both individual settings and classroom settings. Though people learn at their own pace, I always provide challenges within a student's zone of proximal development. I develop plans and keep track of students' progress so we stay organized and ensure learning is cohesive and continual. I aim to direct lessons based on what the student wants to learn most and what genres of music they are interested in. I also change the structure of lessons based on how the student learns or what seems to work for them. Students can typically count on lessons being geared towards learning fretting-hand techniques, chords, fretboard comprehension, finger-picking styles, picking and strumming techniques, and most importantly how to listen. Operating an instrument such as guitar with foundational technique is almost secondary to having an auditory architecture that can make sense of the sounds we listen to. I am a professional in playing jazz, but am also able to teach the styles of rock, blues, folk, classical, and pop, and more.
I teach people because I love watching students grow. I love being part of students' journeys to becoming better musicians and better people. Teaching can be very challenging as it requires me to provide material for students that is all together interesting, achievable, and directional. This always depends on the students, so I am constantly thinking about how I can be the best for individual students. I love working, thinking, learning, and making music, all of which happen when I teach students. So although the job is challenging, it is very meaningful to me. I teach using music because I am convinced that it has power to communicate ideas and feelings that could not be explained through words. Any student wanting to be the communicator in the experience should be encouraged to learn how.
Music has been a big part of my life since I was a child singing in musical theater. My passion for music led me to earn my music degree in Jazz Studies and Music Education at California State University, Sacramento. Throughout my time there I have learned a plethora about pedagogy, theory, musicianship, music history, composing, and arranging which I use for lessons. I started to pursue guitar seriously in high school when I fell in love with a particular genre of music: jazz. Studying the techniques and theory of jazz musicians became my goal in high school, but as the as the years went by, my love for all types of music expanded. As a result, learning other genres of music has made me a more well-rounded musician. Every day I strive to become a greater musician by expanding my repertoire, improving my technique, improving my ears, and gigging locally as much as possible. I often get the opportunity to often play locally with various jazz and rock groups. Aside from playing music and teaching guitar, I also have my teaching credential and teach elementary music in the San Juan Unified School District.

I always try to learn what style of teaching works best. I certainly want to know what type of music the student likes if they have a particular genre that is special to them. I've typically found that students learn best if they are working on multiple aspects of the instrument such as technique, musicianship, theory, chords, and repertoire, rather than focusing on one particular aspect such as a song that is too complicated for the particular student.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out:
Its helpful for students to know why they want to learn. They need to have inspiration. They need to know that learning something new takes an incredible amount of determination. If may be very fun at first, but it will become disciplined work eventually if they want to see progress. Coming back to the inspiration to learn will be refreshing after learning something for a while.

William is an excellent guitar teacher who is knowledgeable and passionate about music theory. I have taken lessons with him for several months so far, and found him to be a pleasant person and very flexible with his teaching style to accommodate students' needs. I look forward to continuing lessons with him for a while.
We are so lucky to have found a real musician. If you want to learn, you want to learn from a trained professional. William is very kind, patient, and quick in figuring out what you need to do to make progress. Every lesson is productive by the minute. My 12 yo son started guitar lessons with him. Now he is teaching my wife, my son, and me. He is actually coaching my wife on singing also so she can strum and sing at the same time. She probably had 4 lessons with him and we are ready to record. Lol. I think it is a little ambitious to produce family music records now, but why not? It’s fun to explore your potential. Besides, it’s important to William to know that he has given us something valuable. William is dedicated teacher and musician. He is a great role model for my boy.
