About Kaelen

I am a University of Cambridge offer holder for maths, predicted A*A*A*A including A* in maths and further maths. I also have 12 GCSEs with 5 9s including maths. I have experience tutoring GCSE maths. I will have completed my A levels by the time these sessions start but not yet received my results.

About the lesson

Small group sessions of 2-3 students, before each session students will complete a problem sheet as homework. Sessions will be twice a day for 1 week, with no lessons on weekends

Problem sheets:
The problem sheet will consist of a series of questions relating to a particular topic that will increase in difficulty, starting with questions below A level difficulty and finishing with questions significantly harder than A level. Students are not expected to complete the entire problem sheet but are expected to spend 1.5-2 hours working through them, getting stuck and finding ways to get 'unstuck' again.

Lessons:
During the sessions I will go through the solutions to all the questions, compare the students’ different approaches to each question and see where people got stuck and what they could've done next. Students will also be able to ask any questions they have in this time. These sessions will last 1hr each. If students find it useful, I might also briefly go over the next topic at the end of each lesson and work through a few example questions.

Collaboration:
Students will also be encouraged to collaborate on the homework, however this is optional. If students would like to, they can be grouped with other students of similar ability and have a call set up to work through a problem sheet together.

How this works:
The aim is to develop problem solving skills and metacognition, by attempting problems beyond A level, students will become faster and more efficient at solving easier problems, therefore improving their ability to answer A level questions quickly and accurately. This will also help to prepare students for A level further maths, and any university admissions tests they are doing, since the transferable skills are the same.

Logistics:
We will cover 1 topic per session, so 10 topics total. I will choose these topics based on what students have covered in school so far, aiming to cover the hardest topics students have done. The topics can be from A level maths, or AS further maths.

Parents:
The first session will be a webinar where I lay out the plan for the week, and the last session will be another webinar where I give a debrief and talk about next steps to ensure success going forward. Parents are welcome to join for these.
