About Louis

My name is Louis, and I am a sustainability and climate change consulting professional living in Los Angeles. I grew up in Tempe, AZ, and spent my K-12 years in public school. After graduating in the top 3% from my high school, I went to the University of California, Berkeley and studied environmental and public policy. I graduated with Distinction from my college, and moved on to earn a Master's degree in environmental policy at the University of Oxford in England. Since then, I have spent several years working professionally - both in higher education and consulting.

What that story doesn't tell you is more important: I grew up in a family of teachers, and have spent the greater part of my life serving as a mentor or tutor to others. I have devoted many volunteer hours to tutoring elementary and middle school kids, as well as to coaching high school students participating in "competitive government" or "We the People" teams. Through college, I worked as a Resident Assistant for three years and volunteered for multiple community non-profits. While professionally I may not be a teacher, advising and mentoring remain a big part of my work.

So, what I hope you will take from this is the following: in some way, I have been where you are, and if I haven't, I will do my best to understand so I can help you get where you want to be. As much care as I will put into helping you understand your work, I will put as much time into supporting you and helping you enjoy the experience. Tutoring has a reputation as being tedious, but it does not have to be. It can be fun, insightful, and wholesome. If that is what you are looking for, then I am the tutor for you.

About the lesson

My desire is to help students really understand the topics and concepts with which they are working. As a student, it is easy to get caught up in logistics - completing the homework, keeping up grades, etc. - but this is easily overcome with support to understand a subject or an approach in your coursework.

I can be most helpful to students who need additional support with their coursework. I work well with high school and college students, but can also be helpful to elementary and middle school students. For each, I can support as both a tutor and mentor - helping you understand how what you are learning has bearing on your life and others. For students who are working on getting to college, I can support you with college prep and essays, helping you communicate your story in a meaningful way. If you're a college student, I can help you think through your career path and professional development through conversations, resume/cover letter advice, and more.

Finally, as far as lesson plans are concerned, that will be a collaborative effort between the student, their parent(s)/guardian(s), and me. We will start by identifying needs, timelines, and goals - and work out a lesson plan that works out for everyone, but most especially for the student.
