Methodology

My teaching methodology is student centered. I believe a student learns best when he or she is performing an application. I use activities and resources that include primary and secondary sources, graphic organizers, games, sorts, music, video, political cartoons, and poetry.

Background

I am a middle school social studies teacher and have been tutoring for five years. My students have achieved success in mastering study skills, impressive Virginia Standards of Learning test scores, and improvements in class grades. My experience includes direct instruction in U.S. History, World History, Sociology, and World Geography.

Professional Experience
August 2015-Present: Social Studies Teacher, Northside Middle School Title I, Norfolk City Schools,
Norfolk, Virginia. Instructed students in United States History I, 2015-2016. Taught End of Course, Honors World Geography, US History II 2016-2017. Currently teaching US History II. While working in a very challenging classroom environment, through excellent classroom management, achieved World Geography SOL pass rate of 96%. Facilitated Courtroom Law Academic Program, 2016 – 2017.

October 2011-August 2015: Substitute Teacher, Virginia Beach City Public Schools, Virginia Beach, VA. Provided instruction to students of various grade levels in a variety of subjects.

February 2015-August 2015: Hair it is Limited, Virginia Beach, VA. Provided service to clients in full service beauty salon. Participated in all applications for haircare. Set appointments, maintained records, and consulted with clients. Designed and implemented marketing techniques.

September 2009-October 2011: Hairstylist, Hair Cuttery Salon, Virginia Beach, VA. Provided service to clients in high traffic salon. Assisted novice stylist in design techniques. Attended various educational seminars on an on-going basis. Maintained impressive retail sales record.

August 2003-June 2009: Social Studies Teacher, James River High School, Chesterfield County Public Schools, Midlothian, VA. Instructed students in World History and Sociology including the Sheltered English Language Learner course. Developed curriculum as participating teacher in the specialty Center for Leadership and International Relations. This program was used to enhance the World History curriculum.

Spring 2008- Planned, executed, and attended international trip to Italy and Greece as an extension of World History course. Arranged special speakers and toured significant cultural landmarks related to class instruction.

March 2008- Served on team of teachers and curriculum specialists to develop curriculum for World History I Sheltered English Language Learners course.

February 2007- Dar al Islam Program for Islamic Studies, Abiqui, New Mexico. Participated in Classroom sessions examining the religion of Islam. Experienced Muslim cultural practices and Islamic tenets.

August 2004- Archaeology Teachers Institute, Fairfield Foundation, Williamsburg, VA. Participated in archaeological field study.
