About Roman

When I was twelve years old, I spent my entire life savings (around $500) on my first personal computer: a Dell Inspiron 1420. Shortly after, I would fall in love with programming.

To this day, there is nothing that I love talking about so much as programming, and I've always enjoyed having opportunities to offer mentorship or work together with others.

I've worked as a professional software engineer for five years, specializing in frontend web development, and during which time I have work extensively with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript/TypeScript.

As a graduate student, I specialized in computer security and published two academic papers, one of which I was invited to present at the 2017 IEEE European Symposium on Security and Privacy.

As an undergraduate student, I worked with UNC’s Accessible Technology program and wrote software (including a switch-accessible YouTube clone) to enable students with visual and motor impairments to more easily use the web.

About the lesson

There is a commonly circulated myth that programming requires a degree of genius. But the best software engineers I've ever met are those who cast aside this notion and focus instead on simplicity and practicality.

In these lessons, I hope to offer you a unique perspective that combines hobbyist and professional experience alike. Rather than focusing on dogmatic "dos and don'ts", I want to guide you on your own journey into programming (and have fun along the way).

You and I will work together to create a curriculum that matches your skill level and interests. We can work on projects, coding katas, homework, or anything else that will help further your understanding and skills. Don't feel the need to come "prepared" to our first lesson; we will work together to figure out where to start!

Many education systems reward successes and punish failures. it is often the case that our failures teach us more than our successes.

In our lessons, I want you to dissociate the word "failure" from any negative connotations it may hold. I want you to take chances, make mistakes, and break things (in a controlled environment, of course)!

These lessons are offered for all levels of proficiency, including no prior experience!

For beginner students, our lessons will primarily focus on building programming fundamentals: arithmetic, data types, variables, syntax, control-flow, boolean logic, etc.

For intermediate and advanced students, our lessons will place more emphasis on meta-skills such as: tooling, design, testability, readability, maintainability, etc.
