About Julianna
I have worked with students for 24 years in both a classroom setting as well as 1:1 in a private tutoring setting. I enjoy guiding students, watching them develop confidence and become excited about math instead of loathing it. I take great pride in fostering a classroom where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and are motivated to learn. I am patient and supportive. I will support your learning by showing you, I believe in your ability to improve by providing consistent, constructive feedback. I will not be sarcastic or shaming. Mistakes are evidence of learning. I'm comfortable being vulnerable with my students and open about my mistakes. When my students “catch” a mistake I have made, it powerfully demonstrates their understanding and engagement! I strive to build strong connections by showing a real interest in your progress and understanding your individual learning style. I customize lessons and materials for you. I remain focused and present for your learning needs. I am punctual and consistent in your lesson preparation so you can be certain that I am dependable and take your learning seriously. I will always use respectful language in all interactions and maintain a consistent, professional tone.

My approach to math tutoring centers on building conceptual understanding and fostering confidence. It moves beyond memorization to achieve true mastery. Methods are adapted to each student to ensure that students not only solve problems but also understand the "why" behind the math. My goal is to equip students with tools to become independent learners, turning potential struggles into academic strengths.
I typically start with an initial assessment: to identify specific strengths and weaknesses, learning style, and academic goals.
I emphasize the "why" and "how" to foster conceptual understanding. Rather than showing a student how to use a formula, the tutor and student work together to understand why the formula works and what it represents. This builds a strong foundation and helps adapt to new problems.
I scaffold learning using the Concrete-Representational-Abstract (CRA) Approach.
Concrete: using physical objects or manipulatives to visualize a concept.
Representational: understanding is translated into drawings, diagrams, or charts.
Abstract: The process moves to standard symbols, numbers, and algorithms.
Active Learning and Questioning: my sessions are interactive. Probing questions encourage students to explain their thought process, which reveals misconceptions and strengthens logical reasoning. Instead of simply providing answers, the I guide students to find their own solutions. Students identify errors in thinking when mistakes are made in order to correct them. Error analysis is powerful for students in learning to avoid mathematical mistakes as they work towards skill/concept mastery.
Positive Reinforcement: I create a low-stress environment where mistakes are viewed as learning opportunities, not failures. Sincere, specific praise builds confidence and is motivating for students.
A typical lesson is structured: Brief check-in to see if student has questions from school, see how student is feeling.
address any immediate questions they have from school.
Next is a review of key concepts from the last session. This spaced repetition reinforces learning and ensures the student has retained the information.
Now I introduce a new topic using the CRA approach, by starting with a real-world example to make the math relevant and engaging. We work through several examples together.
Independent practice follows. Student practices a few problems independently while the tutor observes. Targeted questions (error analysis) are used if the student encounters a roadblock.
Finally, wrap-up and preview where I summarize key takeaways from the session. Assign a few optional practice problems and provide a brief preview of what will be covered next to build excitement for the upcoming lesson.
I customize lessons based on the student's progress and needs. Mastering the current topic is prioritized, even if it means adjusting the timeline.
My focus is on mathematical identity and change a student's mindset from "I'm bad at math" to "I can learn and master this." By celebrating effort and progress, students see themselves as capable mathematicians.
I link mathematical concepts to real-life applications. When learning about linear equations, discuss savings goals. When covering percentages, discuss sales and discounts. This helps students understand the utility of what they're learning.
I strive to be the bridge between School and Home by communicating with parents to provide updates on their child's progress and align work with their school's curriculum. This collaborative approach ensures everyone is on the same page and working toward the same goals.
My lessons are designed for upper elementary and middle school students, from grades 4 through 8, in both standard and advanced/honors courses.
For struggling students, I provide foundational support, filling in knowledge gaps and rebuilding confidence.
For high-achieving students, I focus on enrichment and acceleration, allowing them to explore more complex topics and challenges beyond their standard curriculum.
For all students in this age range: The personalized approach is tailored to meet specific needs, whether they need help with multiplication facts or an introduction to algebra.
