About Ed
Ed Hale has been a professional singer-songwriter and recording touring artist for the last 25 years. He has written thousands of songs, many that have been in TV shows, commercials and movies. He has released 12 albums (Ed Hale, Ed Hale and the Transcendence). He’s had 10 albums in the CMJ (College Radio) Top Ten and 11 songs on the Billboard Top 40 and Top 100 Charts in various radio formats including Alternative Rock, Indie Rock, Adult Contemporary (AC) and Triple A (AAA), including the songs “Summer Flowers”, “Scene in San Francisco”, “The Prince Of New York”, “New Orleans Dreams” and others.
Since taking a break from the road 3 years ago Hale has continued to record and release songs and albums— “Born To Lose”, “American Cinematheque”, “Another Day In the Apocalypse”, and started giving in-person and online guitar and songwriting lessons to individuals and groups. He considers it one of the most valuable and fulfilling things he’s ever done.
“Definitely not something I expected. My little brother suggested it. “Dude you should start teaching people how to play the guitar, songwriting… like a giving back thing…” At first I was more nervous than the students I think. But that moment when things click for them…, they walk in and have never written a song before.., and suddenly they’re full on expressing themselves with a brand new song that’s all their own… something that only they can write. It’s incredibly magical. Very bonding. Very rewarding.”
Songwriting lessons can be done using any instrument, guitar, piano, keyboards, laptops, iPhones. They cover lyrics and chords and melodies and everything in between. They can be combined with guitar or music lessons.
They’re usually accompanied by discussions and lessons in the evolution of popular music and music history to give context.
We start with the basics. Building blocks that we all know about songs but might not know we know. It’s surprising how much everybody knows about what makes a great song. Everybody loves music. So it makes sense. They just need to have it revealed to them step by step and pretty soon they’re writing songs, sometimes really great songs.

The Songwriting Academy was founded by recording artist Ed Hale with a belief that every person is gifted with a love for music and the power of song inside of them. Each person has the ability to write songs that are completely unique and special that can only come from them. The key is just learning the basics of what songs are and a few step-by-step tips and tricks to get them to flow out. Whether it’s one-on-one lessons or group workshops with others, the sessions focus on the basics of how we get ideas, how to start writing a song and all the way through to completing one or many and through to advanced songwriting where we have specific goals in mind when we are writing a song. YES it’s magical. It’s art. And it’s extremely fulfilling and enjoyable. But there are also skills involved that might seem mysterious or tricky at first, but once learned they become second nature and the songs begin to flow.

Ed is an incredible human being and a gifted musician. He's enthusiastic and kind-hearted, and he will always meet you where you are in terms of your development.
Ed is someone who oozes passion for guitar and teaching, and that combined with just him being a cool guy who is super encouraging has helped me really gain confidence in my playing. I feel like I’ve really “leveled up” my skills to a point where I don’t feel shy whipping out the guitar.
Ed is an amazing educator, so patient, and so kind!!! He is also very personable. He has a wealth of knowledge and will truly help you learn how to become a better player, what to pay attention to so you can improve, and provides a tailored lesson based on your skillset. I am so happy I began taking lessons with Ed!!
I’ve known Ed as a teacher for more than 25 years. His natural, love of music shines through him. Coupled with his passion and his innate ability of communication is an incredible benefit to any student. Of course there is a bonus of being able to work with a certified rock star who knows the ins and out of the biz like no other. Give yourself this gift. Just do it. I know you will gain unexpected rewards.
Ed is incredibly enthusiastic about his student’s success and really empowers his students to feel more confident with playing and performing. Can’t recommend him enough!
I’m taking lessons with Ed Hale!!! They’re online. He lives in New York. Of course. We’re in Florida. My husband didn’t believe me when I told him. Thought I was kidding around. Until Ed Hale showed up on a big screen in our HOUSE! We’ve seen him and the band Transcendence in concert at least 5 times. He is everything you think he’s going to be, but like he’s real. If that makes sense. He has a TON of guitars. Something like 50 to 60. Each one is tuned differently. He says it’s for his songwriting. And he knows EVERYTHING about each one! It’s insane. He could lecture at Berkeley or Stanford! His teaching method is BIG. Expansive. He covers everything. Corrects bad habits you might have learned along the way… He basically explains from the beginning he’s been a professional musician and recording artist since he was 17 (duh!) and he only knows how professionals play. So that’s what he teaches you. It’s a thrill. He spends a lot of extra time with me. If I book an hour he’ll stay on with me for an hour and a half. Till he’s satisfied I’ve got something down firmly. He cares about how I’m doing. He tells me to PRACTICE! through texts if I text him something. It’s basically INSANE that this is happening. I am very very grateful.
This guy is smart, honorable, experienced and aware. Everything you would ever want or need in a teacher/mentor.
Ed Hale is a ROCK GOD. Brilliant songwriter, great singer, and he uses all those wicked open tunings that make his guitar playing so cool and mysterious and unique, one of the reasons why the band Transcendence (and his more recent solo albums) has such a great sound. Getting to sit down and learn guitar and songwriting from him has been an amazing experience. He is WAY passionate about the guitar and anything involving music! It’s crazy how excited he gets. And then I get, when he starts talking about or teaching you something. And it’s ALL things music. Could be the woods of the guitar or the history of the brand or certain new progressions or scales he’s showing me or the history of music! Just can’t say enough good about taking lessons from him over this past year. It’s been extremely educational fun exciting inspiring. He makes me want to play and get better. And it’s like yes it really is Ed Hale. It’s surreal. Awesome.
I have not known Ed in the capacity of a guitar teacher, but I have known him as a friend for almost 30 years. He is one of the most integrous, kind and loving people that I know. His commitment and dedication to uplifting those around him is truly astounding. Please do yourself the favor of working with him. He is an excellent musical artist and you will be in very good hands hands as you seek to grow and develop in the craft of playing guitar.
Ed is a very knowledgeable and patient teacher. He has years of experience guitar playing/songwriting and that is evident in each of his lessons. In the time I was with Ed, I learned significantly more than I had while trying to self teach! The space in which he teaches is very organized and optimal for getting a good sound, I never felt cramped or as if the room was too big. He has both acoustic and electric guitar available for lessons as well.
I've known Ed Hale since my 20s and played in his underground band in the 80s and 90s in Miami and I think he is an excellent guitar player with excellent communication skills that can teach at any level. He has genius mentality and I was his drummer for about 5 to 6 years in our original band and I know that he can teach anyone to play the guitar like a pro. Very truly yours Donnie J the groover.
Ed is the best! I’d almost rather keep him a secret than to have all of his time taken up. He’s a master at guitar and an expert at music. If you’re looking to try learn how to play, perform and or write music, I’d suggest reaching out to Ed and taking whatever time slot he has. You’ll be so happy you did!
I've known Ed for several years now and listened to how he talks about his love of teaching. It's clear to me that he is extremely capable of teaching anyone from beginner to fine tuning the skillset of someone who's been playing for a while. I highly recommend him if you want a teacher that can work with YOU!
Ed is truly an amazing teacher, he knows everything you need to know about being a professional guitar player. I would definitely recommend him because he is a great teacher and also a great guy! He is patient and will really work with you to help you learn, and make your learning experience awesome.
Ed is very passionate about music and life in general. He has plenty of life experiences to add to his credentials, which enhance what he has to share with the world.
Ed Hale is a trust worthy instructor with rocking reliable musical background. He is patient sympathetic, and explains the matter at hand effectively. I recommend Ed Hale for beginners, intermediate and pros!
I’ve known Ed for decades and if you are lucky enough to connect with him and get on his schedule, you should jump at the chance to work with him. While he is immensely talented as a musician and songwriter, he is also a kind, genuine, soulful, and truly extraordinary human being. He’s skillful and creative as a musician, “artist” and teacher. And he’s patient, encouraging, and committed to his students. It doesn’t get better than this.
I have to admit I was Skeptical that Ed Hale was living in Brooklyn and giving master classes in songwriting, AND guitar lessons. I’ve been a fan of his band’s music since college, seen them 3 times in concert when they play NYC. You just don’t think of these kind of guys opening up their home and lives to people. But sure enough there he was. On the phone! Jumped at the chance to take lessons from him. First off, he has the sickest guitar collection I’ve ever seen. And he knows everything about every single one of them. His knowledge is vast about guitar. He showed me several of his open tunings that are infamous for the hit songs he writes using them. Which was a thrill. But when it came down to business he turned out to be a really good teacher as well as the coolest guy. He’s patient, but super passionate about playing and music. He uses a lot of examples from other artists and his face lights up when he’s playing you a song he thinks is important, pointing out parts, getting super into it. It’s exactly what i expected. And he guides me through each lesson, often playing along with me, every step of the way till I get it. I’m still learning but i can play guitar now thanks to him. Highly recommended!
Ed knows everything. He’s a great guitar player and brilliant songwriter with a multi decade career in music, with many albums under his belt. As a teacher he is so fun to be around because you can really get to know him.
I tried to learn the guitar but never stayed with it but I’m excited now to have the famous Ed Hale share his mastery of the skills I need to succeed on it. He’s a professional musician so he can tell you why you’re not making progress.
I especially like that a prolific song writer like Ed Hale is willing to show me the techniques he used to write the songs for his albums so I can write my own. I get a master class in the guitar and professional training in the art of song writing. WowEd is an exceptional guitar teacher, passionate and patient with his students. He explains complex concepts in a simple way and has an encouraging attitude. I highly recommend him for anyone looking for a dedicated and talented guitar teacher.
Ed is a great teacher who cares about his students and cares about their interest in music. I would recommend him as a music teacher any time, he taught me how to play the ukelele which I always wanted to learn!
I have to say it is one of the most patient and considerate teachers I’ve ever had. You can tell he’s teaching some thing that he really cares about and loves and that’s why he thoroughly enjoys teaching. This makes me continue to wanna book his lessons and get better at guitar. Thank you so much Ed.
Taking guitar lessons from Ed hale is rather mind blowing. I have many memories of being in the car and hearing one of his songs on the radio and singing along. I had to double take to see if this person offering Master Classes was the same Ed Hale, the recording artist. And it is! I jumped at the chance to sign up for lessons. He’s as cool in person as you’d expect. More so because he’s real and not just a manufactured image of radio video and magazine fame. He’s obsessed with the guitar as you’d imagine. And he brings that passion to every lesson, sharing everything he knows with you in a calm cool manner. He cares about you and your progress. And he has the largest guitar collection I’ve ever seen! Which he lets you play one of them for your lessons if you want. I’m still learning how to play the guitar… But I look forward to taking lessons from him all week. It’s a surreal experience. And very helpful. Can’t say enough about how awesome it is learning from him.
There is so much to say about Ed Hale and his charismatic fun approach to teaching you how to play the guitar. I have had multiple lessons with him and each experience felt unique and refreshing.
He can teach you classic acoustic chords and even palm muting! The guitar lessons are fun and easy to understand.
We often digress into productive topics, from philosophy to finance. So I can definitely consider him a mentor also.
I think the experience and vibe is special. Have fun!View more recommendations
