I believe in a 4 step teaching method:
1. Observe
2. Student helps
3. Teacher helps
4. Independent

When beginning with fresh material, students should focus first on observing and understanding. When attempting problems, the first step is Observe: the teacher should first demonstrate how to solve the problem while the student observes. Next step is Student helps: at this point the student can fill in certain steps in the problem solving process. The third step is Teacher helps: at this point the student should be able to solve most of the problem and understand the process but the teacher is present to correct or answer any questions. Finally, the student should reach Independent: the student should have a strong understanding of the material and be able to solve problems and troubleshoot for most mistakes themselves.

This space is a judgement-free zone, where we all understand that students have different skill sets and inclinations for certain subjects.
