About Maria

¡Hola! I am a Spanish Teacher with more than 15 years of experience. I was born in Asturias, in the North of Spain. During my professional career, I have had the opportunity to develop my teaching skills in a variety of educational settings and to instruct a wide variety of students from all over the world.

I have been teaching in Dual Language programs for more than 10 years all across the United States. In these positions, I taught all the content areas in Spanish to K-2 English speaking students. In addition to this, I have 5 years of experience teaching Spanish as a foreign language, two of those years in an International school in the Philippines where I taught Spanish to K-6 students. I also taught three years in Ireland in a K-6 school and offered Spanish classes to adults in a Community College. Lastly, I worked for a year as an elementary teacher in a bilingual school in Spain.

I received my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education in 2001 from Oviedo University in Spain. In 2007, I completed an undergraduate program about bilingüal and multicultural education from BUENO Center for Multicultural Education in Boulder, Colorado. I obtained my Florida Professional Educator's Certificate in 2012 and TESOL Endorsement in 2018 from UDIMA Madrid Open University. I am currently completing my Master's Degree in Innovation and Research in Education at UNED (National Distance Education University).

I believe that my experience, education and the diverse skills I acquired throughout the years, will enable me to make a significant contribution to your child's learning.

With over fifteen years of teaching experience in the United States, Ireland, Mexico, Philippines and Spain, I have had the opportunity to develop my teaching skills in a variety of educational settings and to instruct a wide variety of students from very diverse academic and social backgrounds. I have consistently promoted an academic climate that fosters diversity, promotes mutual respect, and enhances multicultural and communication skills.

As a teacher I seek to provide my students with an optimal learning environment, accommodating my teaching to their different learning styles, interests, and abilities. I use a variety of instructional delivery methods, materials, and activities that vary in complexity and that promote critical and creative thinking skills. I encourage my students to take responsibility for their own learning.

One of my main goals is to establish and facilitate an engaging and meaningful learning environment that supports the intellectual, social, and physical development of my students. To achieve this goal I use attractive and varied materials to keep my students motivated. I carry out activities related to my students’ daily lives to encourage their participation in the learning process. I promote critical and creative thinking by providing an atmosphere that respects and values personal expression, that is open and conducive to “thinking for oneself”, and that encourages questioning, exploration, experimentation, and intellectual risk-taking.

My previous experience has taught me that effective teachers use a wide range of assessment strategies for evaluating achievement. I integrate assessments into everyday classroom practices and real contexts. I use a variety of approaches such as observation, documentation of student talk, interviews, portfolios, teacher-made tests, self-assessments, peer assessments, and appropriate performance assessments to find out how well my students know, understand, and apply the concepts that are taught.
I recognize that continued professional learning is essential for teachers to maintain and extend their professional knowledge and skills. Therefore, over the years I have participated in many different professional development opportunities in order to improve my teaching skills. I have developed curriculum materials in response of the needs of my students, reviewed and analyzed my classroom practices, observed exemplary instructional methods, participated in online learning programs and learned with colleagues through cooperative planning and problem solving. I shared my expertise by presenting to small groups of staff, designing a website for community access, and participating in parent nights and school-based committees.

I have learned that cultivating and sustaining strong working relationships with all members of the school community is essential if I am to provide a quality education for my students. Parents are informed monthly by newsletters and they are encouraged to participate in classroom activities. I also participate in a foster grandparent program, and I am always eager to collaborate with colleagues and administrators to make the school a better place to learn.

Many elements contribute to the success of an educator and her students. Creative Instructional methods, a conductive classroom environment, lifelong learning, and a strong community partnership are vital. I believe that I have and will continue to contribute to my students’ success by incorporating these elements into my classroom each day.
