About Monica
As a passionate and professional Spanish tutor, I believe that the instructor must first establish a relationship of trust with the student to ensure success. In my experience with both high school students and adults, I was able to cater my classes to their specific needs in an environment of mutual respect. My involvement in World Language workshops and seminars fuels my energy and enthusiasm as I incorporate new approaches and techniques into my teaching. I strongly believe that praise and positive feedback give students the confidence they need to learn a new language.

¡Hola! I teach interactive Spanish classes that are fun and engaging. I'm a heritage speaker of Spanish, originally from Cuba. I am passionate about the Spanish language and its diverse cultures. One fun fact about me is that I lived in Salamanca, Spain for two summers when I was studying for my Master's degree. As a Spanish teacher, I provided instruction in both private and public schools for 29 years and had the opportunity to work with students of all levels from Beginner to Advanced Placement. For the past 4 years, I have taught private lessons both in person and remotely. I pride myself in establishing a safe and welcoming environment in my class where the students feel comfortable as they communicate in Spanish. A typical lesson consists of a warm-up conversation, a review of the homework, a real-life, contextual presentation of the new material that may include a video or an audio and practice activities.

Monica is the best, most understanding teacher in the world!! She explains everything to you so clearly and works with your individual needs. I never feel confused after a lesson. She always reviews what I am feeling unsure of and gives you the necessary confidence to take on more challenging material. I highly recomend her!!
I first met Monica when we were both teaching at the local high school; she taught Spanish and I taught in the special ed program. Part of my job was to go to general Ed classes with our kids who were capable of handling the work. I spent a year in Monica‘s Spanish class with one of my kids. It was a lively Intro to Spanish class with equal emphasis on grammar, vocabulary and culture. I thought she was a really good teacher and that the students enjoyed the class. Several years later, I had decided to learn Spanish and is looking for a teacher. I heard that Monica had retired from the high school and was tutoring Spanish. I studied with her for an hour and a half each week for three years with an emphasis on speaking. She used a variety of texts and topics for speaking prompts and homework. She is a native Spanish speaker and is completely comfortable with English and Spanish, grammar and idioms. She is also totally enjoyable to work with.
I have had the pleasure of working with Monica Lavosky for fourteen years at Montclair High School. I have come to know her on a professional level, as well as on a personal level.
As a teacher, Mrs. Lavosky has a very strong cultural knowledge of the Spanish-speaking world. She studied in Salamanca, Spain and possess great cultural insight due to her travels to other Spanish-speaking countries such as Costa Rica, Panama, and Puerto Rico. She brings the vibrancy of truly learning the Spanish language based on cultural scenarios.
As far a content knowledge, Mrs. Lavosky is a top-notch teacher! She used to teach AP Spanish Language & Culture. She made her classes lively by introducing grammar and vocabulary through the use of over-arching themes found in videos, articles, poems, and short stories.
She instills the love of the language to her students. That's what it is all about: for students to love the language and want to learn it even more. She is very adapt in teaching in all three learning styles, whether it is interpersonal, interpretive, or presentational.View more recommendations
