About Michelle
¡Hola! My name is Michelle Charles, or in class Señorita Charles, and I would love to be your Spanish teacher.
I started working with children at the age of 9, through a combination of babysitting and volunteering at a daycare. I always knew I wanted to be a teacher, but never imagined I’d be teaching Spanish to young children. I started learning Spanish in the 7th grade and it immediately became my favorite subject. At home, I started listening to Spanish music and watching telenovelas. At my summer job, I used the little I knew so far to help customers who didn’t speak English. Though my fluency was so limited, like speaking “broken Spanish”, it was so encouraging to interact enough to successfully help people, slowly getting better each time. By the time I started looking for colleges, I knew a Spanish teacher was the only teacher I wanted to be.
Being a non-native Spanish speaker who greatly benefited from a strong world language program, I realize this is often not the case for students who spend years in a world language classroom yet grow into monolingual adults. My goal, passion, and hope is to ignite a love of learning and communicating in Spanish that will evolve into the same lifetime bilingual love of learning I have been fortunate enough to benefit from, for all of my students.
I not only build foundational and conversational skills in the target language. I also support what the students are learning in other areas of life, as well as focus on social and emotional learning. Following the full immersion model, the learning experience is enhanced by providing instruction in Spanish that is delivered in a comprehensible and contextual manner. With this, my students are able to have an authentic bilingual experience in class. Studies have shown that bilingualism promotes focus, empathy, and overall academic performance. I look forward to working with you!
