About Sky

I started learning Japanese when in fourth grade I met a friend from Saitama whose dad was working in Menlo Park for a year. She didn't know English, I didn't know Japanese, so we taught each other our respective languages in order to communicate. We would point out objects around us to each other and have fun in the sheer act of sharing information, not caring how silly we seemed to other kids. This taught me one of the key aspects to learning a language is to just go for it and worry about niggling mistakes only after you've gotten "used to" the language, just like you get used to a new friend.

I've taught high schoolers Japanese ranging in goals from simply wanting to watch anime without subtitles to preparing for their entrance into a Japanese university. I've taught heritage speakers how to read and write kanji so they can feel more independent from their relatives when they visit family in Japan.

As a non-native speaker of Japanese who learned a great part of the language on my own, I understand how to break down concepts to their simplest parts without relying on the assumption that it will "just make sense" because "that's just the way it is." I love to research etymologies and linguistic reasons for why languages are the way they are, so if you have me as your teacher, you'll always get an answer for, "why is it this way?"

About the lesson

I've been speaking Japanese for over 15 years, lived in Tokyo for several years, and have worked as a Japanese–English translator. I teach Japanese to motivated students of all levels, as well as kanji to heritage speakers looking to strengthen their reading and writing skills.

My lessons are practical, engaging, and tailored to your goals, whether you're learning for travel to Japan, for work with a Japanese company, or for connecting with family.

If a student likes anime, I can show them the most effective techniques for studying with anime. If a student likes food, we can work on learning through recipes. Because we experience this world through language, there is always a way to tie in the things you do in your daily life with the language you're learning.

A typical lesson includes a review of previous material, introduction of new grammar or vocabulary, speaking and listening practice, and targeted exercises to reinforce what you've learned.

I have real-world experience using Japanese professionally and living in Japan. I focus on helping students develop natural communication skills while building a strong foundation in grammar, vocabulary, and kanji.
