About Trisha Mae

I have ten years of teaching experience under my belt. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Education with a focus on Elementary Education and Special Education.

Throughout my career, I've taken on roles mentoring new special education teachers who have joined our district. Additionally, I've served as an English Language Learner (ELL) teacher. I am honored to have been selected as one of our state's LEND Fellows.

Furthermore, I've actively contributed to the development of a responsive school plan in our state, ensuring that our educational environment meets the diverse needs of our students effectively.

About the lesson

As a middle school special education teacher, I've discovered that combining a Structured Literacy Curriculum with Touch-type Read and Spell (TTRS) significantly benefits my students' reading and language development, especially for English Language Learners (ELL) with Asian-language backgrounds. Structured literacy offers a systematic approach to teaching essential reading components like phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. This method breaks down language into manageable parts and provides clear, step-by-step instruction, which helps scaffold learning for ELL students grappling with English phonology and orthography due to differences from their native language.

Integrating TTRS into our lessons has proven especially effective for improving spelling skills. TTRS, a multisensory typing program, enhances spelling, typing, and phonics simultaneously. This approach not only boosts spelling proficiency but also reinforces phonemic awareness and phonics understanding in an engaging manner. Particularly for Asian-language learners transitioning from non-alphabetic writing systems, such as logographic or syllabic scripts, TTRS offers valuable practice in grasping English orthography and strengthening the connections between sounds and letters.

Alongside literacy instruction, I provide support for math skills development among K-6 students. While my main focus is on language and literacy, I incorporate math activities and strategies tailored to students' language proficiency levels and cultural backgrounds. This may entail utilizing visual aids, manipulatives, and real-life examples to make mathematical concepts more accessible and relevant for ELL students. By addressing both language and math skills in a supportive and culturally responsive learning environment, I strive to empower my students to succeed academically and gain confidence across various subject areas.
