One reason my students have done well is that I take the time to understand where they are – academically, emotionally and psychologically – and then develop a customised path to get them where they need to be.

This approach comes from my background in film directing, where I’ve worked extensively with children and was shortlisted for the Academy Awards. I’ve found that the very skills needed to draw a natural, focused performance from a young actor — empathy, precision, encouragement under pressure — are the same skills required to teach well.

The stress of a film set isn’t so different from the pressure of a competitive school environment. In both cases, half the job is helping someone believe they can do something difficult, and the other half is giving them the structure and tools to actually do it.

With enough time and care, I’ve seen students reach heights they never thought possible. I take enormous satisfaction in watching them not only succeed in their immediate goals, but also develop the self-belief to take on whatever comes next.
