About Oettie

New to this platform, hear what previous clients have said:

"I recommend Oettie wholeheartedly. Having her support took the stress out of the process for our son (and us!)." - 11+ student

"Wonderful tutor, who really helped us tremendously with getting our son up to speed for his entrances exams to City of London School." - 11+ student, invitation to CoL

"... the girls like to study with her and have taken well to her approach to teaching. I strongly recommend her as a tutor." - 11+ student

London-based private tutor specialising in school entrance assessments ranging from 7+ to 11+ with extensive, successful experience in preparing students for 11+ pretests and interviews. I have helped students secure offers and scholarships at top schools across London, including COL, Harrow, St. Paul's Girls' School, Marlborough College. My current cohort have all received invitations to interviews or second round assessments to several of their preferred schools (as of January 2025).

As a tutor I bring an enthusiastic but structured approach, aiming not only for academic progress but also a sense of self-motivation and ownership of learning in my pupils. Having always been an eager learner myself, I build my sessions around a growth-based mindset and work to instil a sense of pride in my pupils in all their achievements. The majority of my students are SEND pupils, are new to the UK system or don't speak English at home. They all thrive with our step-by-step approach, taking ample time to consolidate those elements of the curriculum they find harder to grasp.

I’m familiar with a wide range of exam systems (ISEB, CEM, London 11+ Consortium, school own designed tests) and can tutor across all test subjects (English - Maths - VR - NVR). I find 11+ support a rewarding part of my work as a tutor because it allows me to work with students who enjoy being challenged and reap the fruits of their work when they get a place at a school which will nurture their talent and interests further.

I like to build an open bond with my students over the months we will be working together, not only because it will benefit our work together when the pressure rises during test term but also because I enjoy getting to know who they are and how they see the world.

New to this platform, here's how parents describe my lessons:

"... very thorough and managed to fill all the academic gaps our daughters had. She teaches from the ground up and makes sure the base of any subject is solid..." - 11+ student, invitations Mill Hill School, Maida Vale

"Oettie is methodical in her approach - working through all relevant modules and identifying strengths and weaknesses to make sure that the time spent with the child is targeted and effective." - 11+ student, invitations to Harrow, Marlborough Co., St. Edwards

Lessons are an opportunity to encourage self-motivation and ownership of learning for my pupils. I offer a warm and open approach where no question about our material is off limits. The 11+ preparation process can be long and intense for students, so we work with a growth mindset. I often get asked 'what does this school want to see?' and the answer is straightforward. They want to get to know your child and that is only possible if they show up as themselves and show the school what they are capable of. Feeling pride in their work, showing curiosity and being comfortable showing what they would like to be better at, is integral to a healthy attitude towards this process.

During the student's first lesson we will assess where they are at for every element of the test the school of your choice uses in their admissions progress.

The initial block of lessons will be tailored to the skill set the student needs to build up before being able to sit mock tests. Once the student works at the expected level across all test elements, they will be challenged to expand that skill set and learn to think outside the classroom box.

Every lesson will start with an informal chat about their week, what they are learning in school, what they might be reading or which wins they would like to share, be it in their hobbies, their classwork or anything else. This will start building the student's confidence in talking about themselves and their interests, which is central to interview preparation. Just like the schools your child will be applying to, I am curious and interested to see what makes them tick.

My most successful students have dedicated on average a minimum of 2 hours per week to actual tutoring and those exceeding the most work in between lessons on homework tailored specifically to their needs. Homework is never excessive and only there to consolidate learning or to make better use of the time we have during lessons.
