About Seymour

I chose to specialise in preparing students for 11+ entrance exams, including the ISEB pre-test, because the focus is very much on improving a student’s reasoning ability rather than just their recall strength. I get a lot of vicarious joy from seeing students have eureka moments.

In the spirit of Socrates, my approach is rooted in encouragement and questioning, designed to promote independent thinking and problem-solving. Much of what is tested in the reasoning papers is unlike anything they are likely to have encountered in primary school. By outlining the method for solving different types of questions and pointing out what to look out for, I can significantly improve their overall performance.

The English and Maths papers also demand more advanced knowledge and competence than what is taught in the national curriculum, so good preparation is essential. Ultimately, schools want to see that your child has strong literacy, numeracy, and reasoning — the three foundations of all higher learning.

For the record, I studied at Winchester College, one of the UK’s most selective independent schools, before earning a BA from the University of Cambridge, an MA from the Sorbonne in Paris, and a PhD on Sophoclean tragedy.

About the lesson

I help pupils succeed in 11+ entrance exams, including the ISEB Pre-Test, through a high-impact, focused approach. My lessons cut straight to the essentials, combining rigorous teaching with clear analytical methods. By concentrating on key principles and applying efficient strategies, I ensure every session maximises both progress and motivation.

In lessons, I focus on explaining core concepts in a structured, accessible way. For example, in English punctuation, I guide pupils through exactly when and why each mark is used, noting the common pitfalls and exceptions.

For homework, I set targeted practice questions to help pupils apply and consolidate what they’ve learnt. Once all the building blocks are in place, we move on to timed practice papers, honing exam technique and building confidence under pressure.

I have years of experience helping students gain places at selective independent and grammar schools. Unlike most tutors, I specialise exclusively in 11+ entrance exams, offering bespoke preparation tailored to the specific demands of each school.
