About Amy
I am an enthusiastic, creative, and loving person with over 8 years of experience working with children. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Developmental Psychology and Early Childhood Education, which gives me a strong understanding of how children learn and grow—both academically and emotionally. I am 22 years old and currently live in North Haven, CT, but I am willing to drive up to 20 minutes away or do virtual sessions!

My Literacy Tutoring Approach
As a tutor, I bring a kind, creative, and patient approach to every session. My goal is to help your child succeed—not just academically, but emotionally as well. With a background in childhood development, I know how to support children when they feel discouraged or overwhelmed. I take the time to listen, encourage, and adjust my teaching style so each child feels confident and capable as they learn to read and write.
Teaching Method and Techniques
I believe learning to read and write should be fun, hands-on, and meaningful. My literacy lessons are built around your child’s interests and learning style. I use playful, engaging techniques like:
● Play-Doh letter formation
● Alphabet games and rhyming activities
● Books your child actually wants to read
● Silly songs and movement games for letter sounds
● Guided reading strategies to build comprehension and fluency
If your child loves animals, we might read books about zoo animals and practice letter sounds using animal-themed word games. My sessions are structured to keep children moving, thinking, and smiling while they learn foundational reading skills.
A Typical Literacy Lesson
A typical session starts with a quick check in with your child about how their day is going and what they have been up to. I find creating a personal connection with students really makes a difference in their academic achievement. At our first meeting, I’ll talk with you and work one-on-one with your child to identify their strengths and needs in reading and writing. From there, lessons will focus on:
● Phonemic awareness (rhyming, segmenting, blending sounds)
● Phonics and decoding
● Letter recognition and formation
● Sight words
● Reading fluency
● Comprehension strategies
● Writing strategies
After each session, I’ll send home fun, optional worksheets to reinforce what we practiced. I will bring leveled books matched to your child’s interests and abilities for you to borrow for at-home reading.
What Sets Me Apart
I personalize every lesson to fit your child’s individual learning needs and passions. Whether your child needs help building confidence, catching up on skills, or preparing for kindergarten through 4th-grade reading/writing expectations, I’m here to support them. I bring warmth, creativity, and a deep understanding of how children learn.
Who I Work With
I primarily tutor children in preschool through 4th grade who need support with early reading skills, phonics, letter formation, comprehension, and fluency. Whether your child is just starting to learn their letters or needs help developing deeper reading strategies and creative writing skills, I’ll meet them where they are and help them grow.

Perfect! Amy was exactly what we were looking for to tutor my 6 year old in reading and writing! She is so kind, easy to work with, communicative and knows what she is doing. She put tons of prep and care into her lessons with my daughter, adapting to her specific challenge areas, and incorporated tons of personal touchpoints to really relate to my daughter and make tutoring fun (for example, she made up a whole story incorporating my daughter's passion for making scrambled eggs and how much she loves dogs, and my daughter read that with so much pride). She went above and beyond and really helped bring my daughter up to grade level. Highly recommend!

I've really seen such a big difference in my daughters math and reading skills since she started working with Amy. My daughter used to dread math, but now she’s actually excited to show us what she’s learned. Amy is patient, creative, and very loving. I can really tell how much she cares about my daughter. One time she came over to the house my daughter had been crying and Amy immediately gave her the biggest hug and did everything to get her to smile again. Highly recommend to any parent looking for a tutor who truly cares.
I was Amy's co-worker an afterschool program we both work for, and she is really one of the most thoughtful people I have ever met. I know that one of the things that the parents and our supervisor love about her is how she can adapt her approach to teaching for each child. She doesn't just hand out the same worksheet to all of the kids. She takes the time to learn about what every single kid likes and what skills they need to focus on. You can tell the moment you meet her how enthusiastic she is about teaching and helping kids learn and I highly recommend her.
