I taught 6th grade English, history, math, and reading for 10 years. For the past 10 years, I have been on contract teaching online undergraduate business classes to adults in the MBA program. One of my students has gone on to a doctorate program.
I have known Garlyn since the late 1990s when we were both 6th grade teachers at Emerald Middle School in El Cajon. In2001, we became teaching partners where she taught English and history and I taught math and science to the same students. I found her to be an excellent teacher who knew her subject matter well and inspired enthusiasm in our students. She was very creative and even wrote a scavenger hunt for a field trip to Balboa Park in San Diego in which all 6th graders from our school took part.
Garlyn is one of the most caring people I know and that showed in the way she taught and treated our students. Being teaching partners and being part of a larger 6th grade team, we worked well together and with the other teachers. Garlyn has so many resources and experiences to draw on which she shared with the students to enhance their learning. Her personal life still includes many learning experiences.
