About Arabella

I'm a working musician myself, still gigging most weekends around town while building teaching alongside it, and honestly the two feed each other more than I expected when I started. Four years into teaching now, I've worked with about sixty students, mostly teenagers and young adults who want something a bit more real and current than formal lessons often feel like. I didn't go to music school, I learned mostly by doing, busking, small gigs, plenty of mistakes made in public along the way, and I bring that same scrappy, learn-by-doing energy into how I teach. I connect particularly well with students who feel intimidated by more traditional, formal teachers, since I'm genuinely still figuring plenty out myself and I think that honesty puts people at ease. My teaching style is relaxed, current, and a bit unpolished compared to more established studios, but it's built on real, ongoing performing experience rather than theory alone. I care a lot about students actually getting out there and singing somewhere, even somewhere small, rather than just improving quietly in private forever. Watching a student work up the nerve to sing at an open mic for the first time is honestly one of my favorite parts of this whole gig. I'm not the finished article myself, and I think that's exactly why this works.

About the lesson

I'm still building my own career, playing street sets and small local gigs most weekends, so lessons with me come from someone actively living the same hustle a lot of my students are chasing themselves. We start with basic breath and pitch work, honestly nothing fancy, because I believe the fundamentals matter more than anything flashy when you're starting out. I teach a lot of what I've picked up performing live in front of actual strangers, things like handling nerves, recovering from a cracked note, and just pushing through when things aren't going perfectly. Repertoire is student-led almost entirely, whatever song someone's genuinely excited about, because forced repertoire kills motivation faster than anything else I've seen. I record lessons on my phone sometimes so students can hear themselves honestly, the same way I make myself listen back to my own rough gig recordings, cringing included. I'm upfront when I don't know something outside my own experience, and I'd rather admit that than pretend otherwise. Feedback is direct but genuinely encouraging, since I remember exactly how discouraging it feels getting torn apart as a beginner myself. We talk openly about real goals, whether that's just personal enjoyment or actually performing somewhere someday. This isn't polished textbook teaching. It's real, current, still-figuring-it-out teaching, and I think that honesty helps.
