About Benn

I have been giving lessons for the past year, and have taught 15 students ages 10-50, most of whom have been undergraduate students. I have a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry and a Master's degree in Organic Chemistry, and I have conducted laboratory research in polymer chemistry and organometallic chemistry. I am fluent in both English and Spanish, and can give classes in both languages.

About the lesson

My teaching method involves interactive problem solving to develop your critical thinking skills. I bring exercises of a range of difficulties, practice exams, and I assign extra problems for homework so that you can continue to practice outside of class.

For synthesis, I like to interactively work out the mechanism of the reaction with you so that you don't just learn the products of the reaction, you also learn the reason why the reaction's conditions produce the products observed. Topics include organocatalysis, organometallic catalysis, retrosynthetic design, and reaction kinetics.

For spectroscopy, I bring problems with a variety of spectra (1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, DEPT, GCMS, IR, HMQC, HMBC, NOESY, TOCSY, INADEQUATE, etc.) and teach you organization of data and methodology of structural determination. I provide chemical shift tables for NMR, GCMS, and IR, and I also bring complex multiplet and stereochemistry problems.
