About Jake

I am a graduate from McMaster University with an Honors Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (Class of 2021) with 7 years of tutoring and teaching experience. During my degree, I supported first-year students as a teaching assistant and academic mentor, while also tutoring peers and private clients both in person and online.

My goal as a tutor is to help students truly understand the material—not just memorize it. By breaking down complex concepts into clear, manageable steps, I help students build confidence alongside strong academic results.

Outside the classroom, I was a captain of my hockey team, an experience that strengthened my leadership and communication skills and reinforced the importance of patience, teamwork, and adaptability when working with others - a skillset that has proved effective in a tutoring environment.

About the lesson

I create a friendly, open learning environment and tailor each session to the individual student’s learning style and specific challenges—never relying on a one-size-fits-all lesson plan. My approach may include real-life examples, visual explanations, and simplified breakdowns of complex concepts to ensure genuine understanding.

I’m passionate about helping students strengthen both their knowledge and confidence. I primarily support high school and university students in physics and mathematics, including algebra, geometry, functions, and calculus.

Jake tutored me in my first year university calculus course, and let me just say… I WOULD NOT HAVE PASSED THAT COURSE IF IT WEREN’T FOR HIM!
I went from a failing grade at the start of the year to an A- grade. He explains things in a way that doesn’t even make it feel like you’re being “tutored” but instead genuinely learning concepts in an engaging and fun way, and is very inexpensive relative to how helpful his work is. Could easily charge more but I can tell he likes to keep it affordable for the sake of his students. 100% recommend to anybody!

My daughter has always struggled with math. In grade 11, we decided for her to get some extra help with tutoring and it’s the best decision we made! Jake is so patient and breaks down math in an easy to understand way. He is so personable and my daughter really enjoyed her sessions with Jake. 10/10 highly recommend.
