About Paul
I come from a professional investigative and senior operational background, where building defensible cases, spotting confirmation bias, and testing evidence under pressure was my day job for decades.
Alongside that, I’ve spent over twenty years deep in UK and Scottish records, genetic genealogy, and archival research. I know firsthand how satisfying it is when a stubborn, 150-year-old family mystery finally clicks into place because you followed the paper trail properly instead of guessing.
I keep things straightforward, jargon-free, and practical.

If you’ve been doing family history for more than a few months, you already know the feeling: you’re flying along, clicking green leaves on Ancestry, and then suddenly you hit a complete dead end in 1845.
Or worse—you realise three different public trees have copied the exact same mistake, merged two men with the same name from opposite sides of the county, and sent your entire branch five generations down the wrong path.
I don’t offer generic "how to search the census" tutorials. My sessions are practical, roll-your-sleeves-up problem solving for people who are genuinely stuck. We treat your brick wall like an active investigation:
* Separating hard facts from family folklore: We audit your tree back to the last verifiable record so you stop wasting time and money ordering the wrong certificates.
* Reading between the lines of old records: Finding the hidden clues in parish registers, witness names on marriage certs, land records, and historical boundary quirks that most people scroll straight past.
* Making your DNA results actually work for you: If you've taken a test and are staring at thousands of 3rd and 4th cousins with no obvious connection, I’ll show you how to cluster them into distinct family lines (using the Leeds Method) and work out exactly where an unknown parent or grandparent fits.
* Sorting out common-name collisions: Proving whether that John Smith or William Brown in the 1861 census is actually your ancestor, or just someone who happened to work in the same pit village at the same time.
Whether you want a one-off session to cross-examine a specific mystery, or a short series to build your own confidence in using archives and DNA tools properly, every minute is spent looking directly at your actual tree—not working through generic slides.
