It is really important, especially in a subject like Mathematics, for students to understand the theory of how a concept works, and then practice applying it in different types of problems. That helps internalise certain ideas, and of course, perform better in examinations, or when faced with difficult problems. I like to spend the first half an hour (of a 1.5 hours class) discussing concepts, and using the remaining hour to practice questions based on the concepts. A detailed plan would be shared with the students before each week/two weeks. This would try and ensure that students are prepared for these classes as well, and there is less time wasted.
