About Joseph

As a current student in the Indiana University School of Education, I am actively learning how to be a better educator day by day. I have taken a multitude of classes researching how to diversify and develop my teaching pedagogy to best suit all learners and make sure I run student focused lessons. I will utilize what I have learned during my education to create a curriculum best suited to each individuals desired learning goals. Likewise, I have the necessary background knowledge from the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies regarding the Japanese language and basic cultural practices. I have a love for Japanese culture and language, and plan to teach English courses in Japan after college graduation. Once I have gathered a thorough background on Japanese dialects and culture, I plan to return to the United States to teach highschool level Japanese courses.

About the lesson

Hello! I am open to teaching people of all ages looking to be introduced to the Japanese language including the basics of speech, the alphabet, as well as common cultural phrases and pronunciations that are more common to be heard or used in Japan or Japanese media. Everything I look to teach will be mostly if not all at the introductory level, but if you have a specific goal in mind that you are unsure whether fits my teaching capabilities I am open to discussion! All tutoring goals will be decided on an individual basis to best suit the individual's needs, however I can also provide a generic plan for those that are unsure of where to start! A typical session will consist of a short lecture overview of the day's grammatical or lexical aim, followed by cooperative drill and practice using a mixture of English and Japanese. After this, we will engage in a conversation-like format held solely in Japanese to practice immersion, However clarifying questions in English is acceptable to a degree. To finish off the session, we will have time for questions and I will highlight the strengths and weaknesses shown throughout the session to pose goals for practice outside of our sessions. Should you want an alternate approach or session setup, we can absolutely discuss what would be more comfortable and beneficial for you! I am also a student so I understand the desire to have leniency and input in how you learn. I will be very open to talking about alterations to any aspects of our sessions!

Max is doing very well! Good at pronunciation after hearing words just once, the only characters that caused trouble were combination characters. Max always appears to be eager to get started and I am excited to continue!

An online textbook will be provided at no additional rate! If the student wishes for a different textbook or form of content to be used, I am open to discussion regarding my personal purchase of this item. Both online and in person lessons begin with a base fee of $20 an hour, however in person lessons have an additional travel fee of $3 per lesson.
