About Benjamin

Guitar, for me, is a deeply personal instrument—one that can reflect a player’s identity, imagination, and emotion. When I teach, I focus not only on building skill but on cultivating that sense of artistic self. I work with students to define their goals clearly: whether it’s playing confidently at an open mic, producing original tracks, or just feeling more expressive at home. From there, we build a path that blends core technique—chord fluency, fingerstyle or picking precision, timing, tone—with explorations in songwriting, improvisation, and arranging. I use the student’s favorite genres as teaching vehicles, so even scale work or theory has musical relevance. I also include “creative detours” like “compose something in 5/4,” “create a loop-based piece,” or “improvise a solo using only three notes.” One student who initially only wanted to play covers eventually wrote and recorded a multi-track instrumental album—it all started with a curiosity about harmony. I keep lessons personal and reflective. We discuss not just how something is played, but why a certain sound or technique resonates. I use journaling, listening assignments, and progress recordings to support that self-awareness. At the end of the day, my aim is not to mold students into a particular kind of player, but to help them uncover what kind of player they already are—and to give them the tools and confidence to go further.

My guitar teaching philosophy is grounded in the belief that every student brings something unique to the table, and my role is to help you discover and develop your voice as a player.

We start with essential skills—posture, finger dexterity, accurate strumming, and clean chord transitions—but those elements are always tied to the kind of music that gets you excited to pick up the instrument. I work with you to identify your musical goals and preferences, then build a path forward that incorporates the songs, techniques, and concepts you need to get there. I explain theory in simple, applicable terms, helping you understand how chords relate to each other, how scales form the building blocks of melody and solos, and how rhythm transforms technique into groove.

We revisit these concepts often, deepening your understanding as your playing grows. I prioritize communication and adaptability: I’ll ask for feedback, observe how you learn best, and adjust our approach accordingly—whether that means playing by ear, working with diagrams, using tech tools, or playing along with loops and backing tracks. Motivation is key, and I keep our work grounded in real-world musical examples and stories of players—both famous and just like you—who’ve overcome obstacles and stayed committed to their growth. I also coach on skills beyond the fretboard: setting realistic goals, building smart practice habits, developing your ear, managing performance nerves, and even crafting your own arrangements or original material.

Every lesson is about connecting the dots between what you love about music and how to create it yourself. Whether you're a beginner learning your first chords or a more experienced player refining your tone and phrasing, my goal is to create a supportive and challenging space where you can develop confidence, creativity, and control in your playing.
