Worked a variety of jobs in industry including carpentry before starting college at 29. Got a BS in Secondary Math at University of New Orleans. I then taught 25 years at the same High school in St. Tammany. I taught mostly Geometry but also taught Algebra, Trigonometry, and Advanced Math.
Most of the useful math (especially geometry) I know, I learned on the job. I built piers on the river, houses and offshore housing before becoming a teacher. Modern students have issues with attention. Actually we all do. Therefore a variety to lessons is essential. Some instruction and some practice. Tools such as rulers, compasses, protractors and graphing calculators help motivate and enhance learning. It also helps motivate students if they know how a skill is used in real life.
