About Martha
I grew up in Minnesota and raised my children in Minneapolis. I taught in small liberal arts colleges in the Twin Cities and then got a job in a small town in Arkansas. I have taught students with very different perspectives on: God, religion in general, philosophy, truth, justice, virtue and "What is a good life?" I am committed to avoiding any polarization. My students come with very, very different perspectives. We discuss controversial issues. I tell them they will have to lead someday, so they should want to learn to have meaningful dialogues. Polarization solves nothing and only creates more problems unnecessarily. We have many problems to solve in the next 50 years. We need to learn to cooperate and think carefully as we solve problems.

My method: I assign readings, asking students to write the three main points that stood out to them and why. When we meet, we talk about their reactions. While teaching, I assigned papers, but as a tutor my goal is to trigger thinking, so students will develop critical thinking skills and be able to communicate with others. Each reading is connected to the others, so students learn to synthesize, to bring together readings and recognize they are parts of a larger whole. My class assignments always relate to the students' lives and should enable them to live better lives. If students come with a writing assignment from a class, I can work with them, as I always did. I enjoy getting to know students' minds, their opinions on justice, virtue, truth, etc.
