I like to spend the first few lessons assessing my student to figure out their strengths and weaknesses in the particular subject - this may be through some initial practice questions with no support, obtaining previous school test feedback from the student or asking the student to self-assess themselves.
After this, I like to focus on each weakness until it becomes a strength. I will first teach them the consent or make sure that their understanding is consolidated and good. After this, I will go through some questions with them to make sure that they grasp how to answer questions. Finally, I will assign them practice questions where they show their entire step-by-step method so I can assess whether they are confident and can now consider the weakness a strength. I will repeat this for the other weaknesses as well.
After a certain period of time, which I believe is sufficient, I will assess them on what we have covered so far to make sure that they haven't forgotten any knowledge that we have learnt and are still confident doing it themselves. If not, we will go over this topic again and this time, I will closely check what part of their understanding is lacking and what exactly can be done to improve this.
This should eventually lead with the student ironing out their mistakes and achieving a top grade at school.
In terms of my experience, I have over a year's experience in educating primary school kids from underprivileged communities in foundation level English and Mathematics.
