About Sydney

I have been singing more or less my whole life, and love trying out different styles. I also play guitar and piano, write music, have some (emphasis on some) music production skills, and am knowledgeable about music theory. I work in psychology research and am very interested in arts and health and the ways music can be used to build self-esteem, create social connection, improve self-awareness, and develop emotional skills. While this will not necessarily work into every lesson, it's something I really value in my work!

About the lesson

I have learnt piano myself through a mixture of being self-taught and formal, university training, so I come prepared with a range of methods to help you learn proper technique during our lessons, and to guide your self-study outside of lesson time.

Beginner piano lessons will combine a mix of music theory/music reading instruction, so that you can get comfortable reading sheet music and understand the structure of whatever you're playing. I will likely give you some short pieces/exercises to practise, but the goal is to get you playing what you want to play, whether that's pop, jazz, classical, and so on (although I'm always happy to make recommendations)! So early on I will try to get you playing something you like and build up your skills to suit.

I can offer lessons in my home with my full-sized keyboard if needed or preferred.

Please note I only teach piano lessons for those with little to no experience playing piano, as I don't feel I am best suited to supporting players at intermediate level or above.

My teenage daughter has been having singing lessons with Sydney for four months so far and really enjoys each session. Sydney is friendly, encouraging and professional. She took time to understand my daughter’s goals and structures her lessons to develop different aspects of her voice. She suggests suitable songs for my daughter’s voice and goals and even provided tools to support practice between lessons, such as guide and warm-up tracks. I fully recommend Sydney to anyone looking to develop their voice.

Our 11 year old daughter has been taking lessons from Sydney for a few months now & has really enjoyed it. Sydney is great with her - professional & engaging. Our daughter wanted to learn more contemporary/pop music vs musicals, opera, etc and Sydney is very in touch with current music. We definitely recommended her!
