I teach science and chemistry with an emphasis on biochemistry and molecular biology.

Methodology

I love science and I like explaining things. I use a pen and paper, or a blackboard it it's a group, and I make sure everyone understands everything as we go along. It's important to have a back and forth with the students to make sure everyone understands everything.

Background

I have a BS in chemistry and a PhD in biochemistry. I have had much lab experience. I have mentored a number of undergraduate students with research projects which allowed them to be co-authors on papers. They were then able to get into medical school or graduate school.

Teaching Philosophy

I enjoy teaching, both science and liberal arts. I believe that my enthusiasm for learning is contagious and my lectures are interesting and stimulating. I like to provide information and make connections that may not be obvious at first. On the science side, Isaac Asimov was one of my favorite authors and I especially like the way he can go over the routine facts of a subject and come up with a wonderful jewel of information. In the liberal arts, I have a good education in history, literature, philosophy and art.

I taught the first third (thirteen lectures) of Nucleic Acid Chemistry for the Chemistry Department at UNC. My lectures covered the history of DNA, determining the structure of DNA, cloning and sequencing DNA, and methods of analyzing DNA. I thoroughly enjoyed this opportunity to teach chemistry at the college level and I think I did a great job teaching about DNA.

As a graduate student I taught Biochemistry Lab. I thoroughly enjoyed this job. I tried to get involved with the students as they were doing the experiments and by asking questions, I tried to make sure they understood the material.

I taught as a high school substitute teacher for the Charlotte, NC School System and for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School System. I taught a semester of chemistry at Charlotte. I believe I developed a good rapport with the students and I gave them a solid background in chemistry. I like the simplicity of giving lectures with just chalk and a blackboard. I think science is exciting and I enjoy both teaching and doing experiments. I have also taught as a substitute teacher for the Chapel Hill and the Durham Public School Systems. Even in a one day class in any given subject that I was assigned, the students were inspired by my presence and got a lot out of their time with me.
