About David
Students who struggle with math often become so frustrated that they are unable to ask a specific math question. You hear things like "I don't get this." or you hear "When are we ever going to use this stuff?" My job is to help a student unlock what they have missed in the past. We need to look beneath the surface to figure out why the student may be struggling. All students can learn and be successful. This may take some hard work, but it can be done. I take a positive approach to teaching. We begin by connecting with where the student is in their math learning right now, not necessarily where a program says they should be. We also discuss what it means to own your learning. We discuss what empowerment means with regard to their learning. We discuss what it means to become an independent learner who is in charge of their math program and how we don't always have to wait for permission to move ahead of the class when possible.

My background and years of experience allow me to provide a perspective for what is taught. I tell my students we need understanding first, then we can develop good learning. When we say "understanding" I am referring to developing the background so that a student may see how the new learning connects with "old" learning. Emphasis is placed on the "why" of what we do. Students learn that there are reasons behind everything we do in math. Understanding those reasons while connecting with previous learning will lead to good learning. Finally, I am always keeping in mind what the student's next math class will be. We don't just teach for immediate needs, we have to look down the road and help the student be in a position to be successful in their next math class.
Background:
Two master's degrees, taught math classes ranging from Algebra1 through and including Advanced calculus AB. I have done volunteer work helping young adults obtain their GED diploma. I have also coached math contest teams. I have had 39 years classroom experience together with four years experience teaching online.
Lessons:
The lessons I teach online have mostly been aimed at students taking Algebra 1, Algebra2, and geometry. However, my certification is for mathematics 7-12.
